In no particular order, here are the top 10 Winnipeg Mommies of 2008:

10.  Love to Read Mom – With 6 kids (all hers, all single births and all under the age of 10) tackling the play-structure at a local fast-food joint, this mom enjoyed a cup of coffee and a good book.

9.  And the Golden Celery goes to….Every mom I see at the grocery store with more than one child in a their overflowing cart. Complimentary chocolate chip cookies from the bakery are permitted and the really impressive moms bring along additional snacks and drinks and escape via the candy-free checkout aisles (didn’t know these existed? Locate which checkout aisle is chip-free in a grocery store near you).

8.  Moms in malls with twins. Enough said.

7.  Two weeks after giving birth to her third child (all under 4 years old) this superstar mom showed up at the preschool wearing jeans that probably would have fit me in grade 5.

6.  Moms who bundle up their children and take them for sleigh rides. Kudos.

5.  Foster Moms. I salute you.

4.  Single Moms. I admire your courage.

3.  Mothers who have children with special needs. No one is more exceptional than you.

2.  Grandparents who have adopted their grandchildren and are mothering all over again. You clearly have more love to give.

1.  Stay-at-home moms, stay-at-home dads (even though you’re never invited to playdates and have to attend Mommy-and-Tot classes referred to as Parent-and-Tot classes on registration forms but are still called Mommy-and-Tot classes by everyone who teaches and attends them), work-at-home moms, work-outside-the-home moms and homeschooling moms. Whatever makes you happy, works best for your family and is in line with your own personal parenting philosophy of raising loving, well-rounded children, cheers to you all..

When I’m at home on New Year’s Eve, eating sushi in my fleecy pajamas, I’ll raise my glass to each and every one of you.

Happy New Year everyone!
