TOKYO — The fifth-strongest earthquake in Japanese history unleashed a ferocious tsunami Friday afternoon, killing hundreds of people, triggering widespread fires that burned out of control and threatening a nuclear power plant.
The earthquake, 8.9 on the Richter scale, was centred under the sea about 300 kilometres east of Tokyo. It struck at 2:46 p.m. Friday, Tokyo time, which was 14 minutes before midnight Thursday in Winnipeg. It sent a seven-metre tsunami that surged several kilometres inland, causing untold horrors.
