Re: U.S. right-winger blasts Canada (March 24). I hope I'm not the only Canadian offended by Ann Coulter's remarks at Western University this past week. Free speech is, indeed, a fundamental freedom that is shared by Canadians and our neighbours to the south; but it does not trump freedom of religion or basic human rights. No human being should be subjugated to a public defamation of their race, gender or religion.

Coulter has made a very profitable living since 9/11 by slandering the Muslim faith and thriving on controversy. I’m appalled that any Canadian institution of higher learning would consider allowing someone who feeds on prejudice to set foot on campus, let alone pay ($10,000) for a lesson in real hate crimes.

I pride myself on being a Canadian for our collective acceptance of people of all faiths and nationalities. Both Western University and Ann Coulter should be ashamed of the remarks made on that campus and for taking a large step backwards in progressive thinking.
