Re: Links plan loses on scorecard (May 22). In addition to the obvious health and recreational benefits of golf, participating in the game provides an interesting opportunity to note a person’s character, i.e. how their scorecard compares to what you’ve actually observed in play.

In this regard, how can an auditor conclude that there are golf special operating agency losses when the courses are busy and a successful company from Ontario sees the opportunity to make a profit in leasing them from the City of Winnipeg?

Hockey rinks, indoor soccer, swimming pools and even public libraries are heavily subsidized, while golf is sustainable with modest fees. Civic-minded politicians once created all of these publicly owned assets for the citizens that they represent.

Many seniors on fixed incomes, women’s groups, youth and casual golfers would not fit into the fast-paced game typically associated with private golf courses, and they remain worthy of continued consideration.
