Temporary lot at park OK’d
Re: Friends of Upper Fort Garry want interim parking lot to raise funds (May 25). This request needs an emphatic no. This millionaire club worked hard to kill a high-rise apartment project that would have gone up nearby so they could have their little park space.
Instead of having a denser neighborhood with actual people living downtown, these guys want to install a gravel parking lot? What a joke.
— TG2
@TG2: You’ve said it better than I can, but I’ll add my two cents.
What is visible of the park so far is underwhelming and lends credence to the view that the park was a half-baked idea that was really meant to block the high-rise apartment. This request of the millionaires to build a parking lot with no design standards where they said they were building a park should be rejected, and they should be asked to complete the park or allow the property to be used for alternate development that is congruent with the city’s goal of having more people live downtown.
— Spence Furby
They should have built the apartment block. People would be there now.
— Rodney 2
One word — no. Temporary lots have a habit of becoming permanent.

When will the park open? So far for the last number of years all I have seen is a fence and two construction workers drinking coffee.

The great debate debate
Re: Conservatives’ debate strategy a game changer (May 25). If you want debate, watch question period in the House. These people are pros — every last one of them is really, really good at talking and saying very little at the same time.
As opponents, each candidate will read whatever they want into what another candidate has said. There will be the usual backstabbing and polite insulting.
At the end of it all, the only things the viewer will be left with are the benefits of a nice nap and a hazy idea that Canada has four not-so-great political leaders to choose from.
— emcee51
The Conservatives will be in five debates by reputable news media, so debating isn’t the issue.
One possible explanation I heard on why they are skipping this one debate is that the Conservatives want to pit Thomas Mulcair and Justin Trudeau head to head, with the expectation Mulcair will absolutely destroy him. The Conservatives aren’t dumb.
— TheBigChill
If memory serves, fewer people watch these things with each passing election. Perhaps too much emphasis and importance is being attached to them.
