The city is recalling 77 laid-off workers to open up more of its libraries.
All of Winnipeg’s public library branches will be open for contactless pickup of holds and dropoff of returns as of March 1, the city announced Wednesday.
Since December, only 10 library branches have been open for such services during limited hours, mostly on weekdays.
Part-time employees from the community services department, who had been temporarily laid off due to COVID-19 closures, will be asked to return to work, the city said.
“I’m very pleased to see that staff are being called back,” Mayor Brian Bowman said Wednesday, adding the city is looking into opening other community services in a safe manner.
Hours will be expanded when library branches reopen in March, though times will vary depending on the location, said Jay Shaw, the city’s emergency operations manager.
All buildings will remain closed to the public, and Winnipeggers are reminded to wear masks, follow social distancing rules and sanitize hands when picking up or dropping off items.
The Cornish Library will remain closed for renovations.
