Portage Place Shopping Centre has closed its food court seating area.

As of 7 p.m. Wednesday, the tables were off limits to the public and the area was taped off.

On Thursday, some restaurants remained open, and people bought food and sat in other areas in the mall.

Most retail centres in the city have undertaken similar measures to combat the spread of novel coronavirus. Many malls have become deserted as individual stores have closed.

Portage Place remains busier than many other malls because it's a social hub for people who live downtown.

Portage Place general manager Dave Stone said the mall has stepped up cleaning efforts to fight the virus.
