COSTA MESA, Calif. – The Los Angeles Chargers placed guard Ryan Groy on the league’s COVID-19 reserve list Thursday and cancelled practice.
The Chargers said they were notified of a positive test Wednesday night and that an unidentified player immediately went into quarantine. The team also identified the player’s close contacts, and they remained away from the complex.
All team meetings were held virtually in preparation for Sunday’s game at the Denver Broncos before coach Anthony Lynn cancelled practice, which was supposed to be just a walkthrough.
Lynn, who had a bout with the novel coronavirus in June, said he wanted the team to have another round of testing before resuming practice. This is the first time a Chargers player has tested positive since the league’s daily testing started during training camp, and they were one of the few teams to not have a player opt out for the season.
The Chargers said they did an extra round of deep cleaning Thursday on top of the regular routine of multiple daily cleanings.
Players do not have to test positive to be on the COVID-19 reserve list. They can be placed on there for having contact with others who have tested positive or because further testing is needed.
“We’ve done a really good job of contract tracing and players take this very seriously,” Lynn said. “I just want to make sure that we keep it contained and give the players a little more peace of mind. We’ve talked all year about how different things are, so we knew we have to adjust and adapt, and that’s kind of what we’re doing today.”
NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy said there have been no discussions about rescheduling Sunday’s game and that as part of their protocols, they will continue to monitor test results. McCarthy added this is the 72nd instance of one or two players or team personnel testing positive that hasn’t resulted in a change to a game.
Both teams are 2-4 and have already had their bye week. This game was originally scheduled for Nov. 22, but was moved up three weeks after Los Angeles had a slew of scheduling changes because of other positive tests throughout the league.
Groy has started the past three games at right guard, but suffered a biceps injury during last Sunday’s 39-29 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars. Groy, who is in his seventh season, did not practice on Wednesday because of the injury. He was first placed on injured reserve before subsequently being moved to the COVID-19 list.
