Jerome Dondo is once again running for election as a Christian Heritage Party of Canada candidate in the Portage-Lisgar riding, and his hopes are high.
“It’s my fourth run as a federal candidate,” Dondo said. In 2011, he placed fourth in Portage-Lisgar with 805 votes, and had previously run in Brandon-Souris and Dauphin-Swan River-Marquette.
The 44-year-old accountant from St. Claude said he’s inspired to run again by his strong feeling that voters in Portage-Lisgar need a true conservative option. “There is no other option for someone to vote pro-life,” he said.
He and wife Angela have nine children.
His conservative philosophy extends to fiscal policy. He said the Christian Heritage Party candidates believe the best way to help the Canadian economy is to lower taxes for businesses and individuals.
“We would also use money to pay down the (federal) debt,” he said.
The money saved on financing the debt would be used for federal programs, such as supporting small family farms.
He said, when driving around the riding, he’s seen damage to bridges and roads caused by Assiniboine River flooding in 2011 that still hasn’t been repaired. Dondo would take a page out of federal economic policy dating back to just after the Second World War and offer municipalities interest-free loans to spend on infrastructure projects.
“It’s time for government to fix the problems, not just patch them up,” he said.
Dondo has already attended summer festivals to meet Portage-Lisgar voters. He said he’s been encouraged by the positive response he’s received in terms of volunteers and donations to help with his campaign.
“It’s been great,” he said.
