Hey there, time traveller!

The Herald posed four questions to all candidates for election in Elmwood-Transcona. Here are the responses from Conservative candidate Lawrence Toet.
Q: How would you help spur economic development in Elmwood-Transcona?
A: Small businesses in our community are engines for job creation and grow our local economy. As a former small business owner, I understand the important contributions they make and the challenges they face. Since 2011, I have been and remain committed to doing everything I can to support local small businesses and entrepreneurs in Elmwood-Transcona to do what they do best, recognizing market needs and creating goods and services to meet those needs. If re-elected I will support cutting payroll taxes so that workers in our community will see their take-home pay increase and local businesses, especially small businesses, will be able to create new jobs and invest in their current employees. I will also support lowering the small business tax rate from 11 percent to 9 percent over the next four years, which will help businesses create more jobs to support families in our community.
Q: How do you feel you and your party can support the lives of the riding residents, particularly those with lower than average annual incomes?
A: Supporting hard-working families is where my journey as a Member of Parliament began and I remain committed to supporting measures that make life more affordable for all members of our community. I also understand that the cost of living can be a real challenge for those on fixed incomes. In particular, single seniors are among our community’s most vulnerable citizens and face unique financial challenges and that is why I will support a new $2,000 “equivalent-to-spouse” Pension Income Credit for single and widowed seniors who have pension income. I will also continue to advocate for strong federal investment in affordable housing to improve the quality of life for low-income families, individuals who are homeless or at risk of homelessness, low-income seniors, and persons with disabilities.

Q: What project would you like to pursue within the riding if you had the chance to bring it to the federal level?
A: Maintaining and renewing our critical infrastructure by making key investments in highways, roads, bridges, and public transportation will help ensure our community keeps moving and our economy can keep growing. I will continue to work closely with all levels of government to identify the infrastructure priorities that will have the greatest benefit for our community in the years to come.
Q: What issue, that is not one of the issues above, do you feel is of the most concern to Elmwood-Transcona residents and how will you address it?
A: To help ensure our community’s long-term growth and success, I know it is essential that young people have affordable access to the training and education they need to get well-paying jobs. Since 2011, numerous organizations in Elmwood-Transcona have received federal funding for youth programming and services that help hundreds of young people get the hands-on experience they need to start their careers in high-demand areas, such as skilled trades, tourism, and health sciences. If re-elected, I will continue to ensure strong federal investment in community programming that makes a real difference and helps young people access meaningful employment opportunities in our community.
