NDP MP Daniel Blaikie held off a strong push from Conservative Lawrence Toet to hold onto Elmwood-Transcona.

Blaikie’s win was in stark contrast to the nail-biter result of 2015, when he defeated the then-incumbent Toet by a mere 61 votes, the tightest race in the last election.

With 169 of 187 polls reporting, Blaikie claimed 47 per cent of the vote, while Toet attracted 36 per cent.

Liberal Jennifer Malabar finished third, with 27 per cent of the vote.

Blaikie thanked supporters for sending the Liberals a message without resorting to electing a Conservative government.

“We were trying to let people in Elmwood-Transcona know that if they wanted to send Justin Trudeau a message, they didn’t have to sign up for a bunch of Conservative cuts to get that done,” Blaikie said. “People heard that message.”

Blaikie told reporters he credited his victory to his constituency work and to the performance of party leader Jagmeet Singh.

“One of the big barriers at the beginning-of the campaign was that people didn’t know Jagmeet Singh and as they got to know him through the campaign they began to really like him because he’s the guy who’s got the right values, the right priorities. “

More than 200 cheering supporters greeted Blaikie as he entered the Cavalier Inn on Regent Avenue.

He was piped into the bar by his father, Bill, who had been the area NDP MP from 1979 to 2008.

Toet said he was proud of the clean campaign he had run.
