People across Canada will take time this week to honour the country’s veterans and active Armed Forces members for Remembrance Day (Nov. 11).
Services will be held Saturday at Royal Canadian Legion branches across Manitoba, starting at 10 a.m.
The Free Press is not publishing a print or e-edition Saturday, but Friday’s newspaper will include special features typically published on the weekend. Readers can also visit winnipegfreepress.com for the latest news and information.
Many businesses and government services will change their hours for Saturday and the following Monday.
Here’s a selection:
SHOPPING
CF Polo Park will be open 1-7 p.m. Saturday. St. Vital Centre will be open 1-6 p.m. Kildonan Place, Grant Park Shopping Centre and Garden City Shopping Centre will be open 1-6 p.m. The Outlet Collection will be open 1-9 p.m.
The Forks Market is open.
Most grocery stores will be open with reduced hours, including Safeway (1-11 p.m.), Walmart (1-10 p.m.) and Costco (1-7 p.m.).
Liquor Mart locations in Winnipeg will open at 1 p.m., with closing times varying. For details on exceptions and rural Liquor Mart hours, visit http://wfp.to/6Tb.
Beer vendors and private wine stores set their own hours for the holiday, so Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries Corp. suggests the best way to find out if the one near you will be open is to call.
ENTERTAINMENT
The Assiniboine Park Zoo will be open 1-4 p.m. Saturday.
The Canadian Museum for Human Rights will be open 1-5 p.m. Admission for military personnel and veterans, and their families, is free Saturday.
The Children’s Museum will be open 1-4:30 p.m.
The Manitoba Museum will be open 1-4 p.m.
The Royal Aviation Museum of Western Canada will be open 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
The Winnipeg Art Gallery will be open 1-5 p.m.
Movie theatres are open.
RECYCLING AND TRASH
Recycling and garbage will be collected Nov. 13 normally for those with Monday as their collection day.
The Brady Road landfill will be closed Saturday and open 5:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday.
LEISURE ACTIVITIES
All city-run arenas, indoor pools, fitness centres and leisure centres will be closed Saturday, except for the Cindy Klassen Recreation Complex (open 2-6 p.m.), Margaret Grant Pool (open 1-5 p.m.) and Pan Am Pool (open 1-5 p.m.).
WINNIPEG TRANSIT
On Saturday, buses will operate on a Sunday schedule.
Transit will offer free service to Armed Forces veterans and those currently serving, including cadets and reservists, along with one companion. Those boarding the bus should wear a military uniform or present military identification when boarding.

LIBRARIES
All Winnipeg Public Library branches will be closed Saturday and Monday.

CEMETERIES
Brookside, St. Vital and Transcona cemetery grounds are open 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Cemetery offices will be closed on the holiday.

GOVERNMENT SERVICES
Civic, provincial and federal offices are closed Monday.
The Winnipeg Parking Authority is closed Saturday.
The Winnipeg Animal Services Agency will be closed Saturday and open noon to 5 p.m. Monday.
There is no mail delivery Monday. Canada Post offices are closed, but post offices operated by the private sector will be open according to the hours of service of the host business.
