It’s official: Turtle Time is over

Milt Stegall, the svelte, smiling slotback who has scored more touchdowns than anyone else in the entire history of the Canadian Football League, announced his retirement from the Winnipeg Blue Bombers this morning.

Father Time finally tackles Stegall

I still remember where I was standing when I insisted the Winnipeg Blue Bombers should cut Milt Stegall's sorry butt.

Myself and a colleague were huddled in the passage way to one of those decrepit rooms in the bowels of what was still called Winnipeg Stadium back in 1997. It was the dawn of the Reinebold Era, and the Bombers were cleaning house.

As we were watching practice for the new regime unfold on a blustery, cold day, the quarterback -- maybe it was Kevin McDougal, maybe it was Chris Vargas (oh, the memories) -- heaved a long ball into the heavens. The football fell from the sky destined for the awaiting hands of a then little-known receiver and...

Milt Retires Again: The Sequel, Part III

By Ed Tait 2 minute read Saturday, Feb. 7, 2009

THE Winnipeg Blue Bombers have an answer from Milt Stegall on the subject of his playing future but -- as has been the case in this little game for the last couple of seasons -- they're not willing to say just yet.

The Canadian Press, quoting two sources, reported Friday that Stegall has informed the Bombers he won't be back in 2009. But for a man who insisted in 2007 that he was '99.9 per cent' done after that campaign -- before returning for another -- this story won't become official until later this month when Stegall returns to Winnipeg for a banquet and actually utters the 'retirement' word.

"I know that Milt's going to be in town around the 19th of February and I expect that he'll make some kind of announcement at that point," said Bomber head coach Mike Kelly. "We had lunch with him down in Mobile (at the Senior Bowl) and it was nice to be in a relaxed atmosphere with him. He'll be up here soon and he'll make the announcement then."

Asked if they already had their answer from the future hall of famer, Kelly said: "Maybe."

Milt Stegall still won't make it official, but the Winnipeg Blue Bomber legend continues to drop more hints his playing days are over for good.

Stegall stymied in last kick at Cup

By Ed Tait 3 minute read Sunday, Nov. 9, 2008

MILT Stegall won't make it official until he's good and ready. But the legendary Winnipeg Blue Bombers receiver sure dropped enough hints -- as did his starting quarterback -- to leave the distinct impression his hall-of-fame career is done.

Stegall had five catches for 56 yards in Saturday's 29-21 East Division Semifinal loss to the Edmonton Eskimos and was in a retrospective mood afterward.

"Football is football. I had a great time. I enjoyed it, regardless (of not winning a championship)," said Stegall. "Of course, the ultimate goal is to win the Grey Cup, that's my only goal. But things don't always work out the way you want them to. You gotta keep moving on, which I definitely will do."

Asked if this was the last time we would see him in Winnipeg, Stegall -- as always on the subject of retirement -- fired back a cryptic, wise-acre answer.

Obama victory buoys Bombers

I'll always remember the first time Milt Stegall referred to his then-newborn son Chase as "the first black president of the United States."

Someone nearby chuckled.

Stegall took notice.

"I'm not joking," he insisted, with a purposeful stare that only Stegall and Mark Messier can muster.

Milt minces no words when it comes to Matthews

3 minute read Friday, Sep. 12, 2008

THE Winnipeg Blue Bombers practised at Rogers Centre on Thursday in their new navy blue with yellow stripes retro jerseys as part of the CFL's Retro Week.

Winnipeg will also wear navy helmets -- with no logo -- while the Argos will also sport throwback jerseys. Expect the retro theme to continue in the next few years as teams honour the '60s, '70s and '80s with other looks and uniforms.

THE DON RETURNS: This will be Don Matthews' first stint on the sidelines since a win over Winnipeg in October 2006.

He left the game for health reasons -- his anxiety attacks had become so bad he was afraid to leave his house -- but after two years in Oregon and thanks to the right combination of medicines, he is back and looks 59, not 69.
