Conservative Leader Hugh McFadyen has pledged to invest $5 million in a new 15,000 square foot home for the Osborne House women’s shelter.

At the same time, he would expand the use of GPS technology to track offenders to protect victims of spousal abuse.

McFadyen told a news conference that Osborne House is currently overcrowded and in need of $1 million in renovations.

No other political party is promising the shelter a new home, said its director Barbara Judt. Osborne House has been upset with the response of Manitoba Housing to concerns about mould in its current building.

Meanwhile, the ankle bracelets proposed by the Tories would include an alarm that could be remotely activated if the offender entered certain areas. A cell phone is also built in to the bracelet.
