This is not exactly what the NFL and Netflix had in mind when they thought they would be getting big-name quarterbacks Jayden Daniels vs. Dak Prescott and a high-stakes matchup of NFC East rivals Washington Commanders and Dallas Cowboys in the Christmas Day spotlight.

As things stand now, it is hard to imagine many folks eagerly anticipating a meeting Thursday between bad teams that will miss the playoffs — and with Daniels, who has been shut down for the season after a series of injuries limited him to just seven appearances, doing no more than appearing on the sideline in street clothes.

“When you do circle those matchups, that’s exactly what you’re thinking: This is going to be cool. How it’s all laid out — division games right here at the end between two games of Philadelphia with a Dallas game in between,” said Washington coach Dan Quinn, whose team dropped to 4-11 by losing to the Eagles last Saturday and will close against that same club in Week 18.

“Playing these division games, they still mean a lot. They mean a lot to the players, the coaches and the fans,” Quinn said, perhaps trying to persuade himself and his locker room as much as anyone. “And so that part is still good, but not to the level that you wanted it to be.”

John Robertson, two-time European Cup winner with Nottingham Forest, dies at 72

NOTTINGHAM, England (AP) — John Robertson, a former Scotland winger who won the European Cup twice with Nottingham Forest and scored the only goal in the 1980 final, has died. He was 72.

The Premier League club said in a statement Thursday that it was “heartbroken to announce the passing of Nottingham Forest legend and dear friend, John Robertson.” No cause of death was given.

Robertson won 28 caps for Scotland during his five-year international career, which included being selected at the 1978 and 1982 World Cups.

He became a cult hero at Forest after playing an integral part in the East Midlands club's European Cup victories in 1979 and 1980.

Snider credits mom, siblings for storied competitive frisbee career

Some kids grow up around the hockey rink or the soccer pitch. For Winnipeg’s Quinn Snider, it was the ultimate frisbee field.

Growing up watching their parents compete, Snider, now 27, his brother Luke, 29, and sister Anya, 30, all wound up playing ultimate frisbee. All three have represented Canada on the world stage.

Snider began playing ultimate in Grade 7 at Westgate Mennonite Collegiate, joining the program founded by his mom, Vaughn Rempel Snider.

“I was really just doing it because my mom was coaching and my brother and sister were doing it,” he said.

Commanders turn to 39-year-old Josh Johnson on Christmas with Jayden Daniels and Marcus Mariota hurt

ASHBURN, Va. (AP) — The Washington Commanders will start 39-year-old Josh Johnson at quarterback for their Christmas Day home game against the Dallas Cowboys, coach Dan Quinn announced Wednesday.

Washington shut down Jayden Daniels for the final four games of his injury-plagued second season following an aggravation of a previously dislocated left elbow. His replacement, Marcus Mariota, suffered a quad injury and required stitches in his throwing hand during Washington’s 29-18 home loss to the Philadelphia Eagles last weekend.

The QB changes epitomize Washington’s troubled follow-up campaign after finishing 12-5 and reaching the NFC championship game last season. The Commanders, 4-11, have lost nine of their last 10 games. That includes a 44-22 setback in Dallas (6-8-1) on Oct. 19. Both teams are eliminated from postseason contention.

The Commanders are likely to be without left tackle Laremy Tunsil (oblique) for a second consecutive game, defensive tackle Daron Payne (back) and linebacker Nick Bellore (concussion).

Roughriders re-sign Canadian receiver Samuel Emilus to two-year contract extension

The Saskatchewan Roughriders have signed Canadian receiver Samuel Emilus to a two-year contract extension, the CFL club announced Wednesday.

Emilus was named the top Canadian of this year's Grey Cup after he caught 10 passes for 108 yards in the Roughriders' 25-17 win over the Montreal Alouettes.

The 28-year-old was also the Roughriders' top receiver in the West Final, where he had nine receptions for 100 yards.

The six-foot, 200-pound receiver from Montreal played seven regular-season games in 2025, registering 588 yards with two touchdowns on 37 receptions.
