Ajoke Olorundare, founder of SUGR WAX, was selected as Futurpreneur Canada’s RBC Rock My Business Emerging Black Entrepreneur Award Recipient

A company that got its start in Winnipeg has a vision of inspiring a world, filled with self-confidence. Local entrepreneur Ajoke Olorundare founded the start-up SUGR WAX, a direct-to-consumer brand that sells sugar wax for hair removal and accessories.

“The mission of SUGR WAX is to be an e-commerce leader in hair removal products,” says Olorundare. “All products are designed for consumers to use in the comfort of their own home.”

For Olorundare, it is also a mission of SUGR WAX to make sure the product’s comfort does not just end at the delivery process, but also while using the product as well.

“Our product is formulated with consumers in mind,” says Olorundare.  “The wax is applied in the opposite direction of hair growth and does not require strips.  SUGR WAX’s removal paste is less painful than waxing, works on all types of hair and gives smooth skin that lasts longer than shaving.”

Born and raised in Winnipeg, Ajoke graduated from the University of Winnipeg with a degree in International Development Studies. She started her business as a means of transitioning out of her corporate career.  She currently lives in Toronto where SUGR WAX is now her full-time focus.

Ajoke recently participated in Futurpreneur’s newly expanded, free digital Rock My Business workshop series, supported by RBC Future Launch. Futupreneur Canada provides financing, mentorship, and resources to aspiring young entrepreneurs aged 18-39.

Participants in the workshop series were able to apply for a RBC Rock My Business Start-up Award, offering entrepreneurs $10,000 to help kick start their dream business.

This year, there were eight, $10,000 awards – six to recipients aged 18 to 29 for the Youth Entrepreneur Awards, one to the recipient of the Emerging Black Entrepreneur Award, and one to the recipient of the Emerging Entrepreneur Award for aspiring business owners aged 30 to 39.

On July 6th, Futurpreneur announced Olorundare the recipient of Emerging Black Entrepreneur Award.

“Entrepreneurs are the heartbeat of a thriving business community, and the entrepreneurial spirit is alive and well here in Winnipeg,” says Kim Ulmer, RBC Regional President, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Nunavut, & Western Ontario.  “This is a city where we cultivate some of this and the next generation’s leading innovators, risk takers, and changemakers.  From heartbeats to hair removal, I look forward to following Ajoke and her business start-up journey from Winnipeg to Toronto or wherever it may take her.”

For Olorundare, the experience participating in the Futurpreneur Rock My Business workshop series provided a path for her to move forward.

“The RBC Rock My Business workshop series gave me support and guidance for my business and a clear roadmap to follow to build a successful business,” says Olorundare.  “The $10,000 grant will support the growth of our business.”
