Stefan LeFors stepped off the plane from Montreal on Wednesday dressed in a dark suit with a tie that could have been lifted from any banker's closet. Conservative would be the best way to describe the Bomber QB's wardrobe and that too would be the quarterback's assessment of his final pre-season tuneup.

Stefan LeFors stepped off the plane from Montreal on Wednesday dressed in a dark suit with a tie that could have been lifted from any banker’s closet. Conservative would be the best way to describe the Bomber QB’s wardrobe and that too would be the quarterback’s assessment of his final pre-season tuneup.

There were things LeFors liked, things he didn’t and he’d love to have more time to get ready for the season opener July 2 in Edmonton. But all in all, things are in hand according to the man who will open the season as Winnipeg’s No. 1 QB. Refreshingly, LeFors is willing to take responsibility for the play of the entire club.

"There are some things to learn from and I want to watch the tape before I say too much but there are some things I’d like to have back," he said. "But this is the pre-season and hopefully you learn from those mistakes and don’t repeat them," said LeFors, who went 9-for-21 in just over a half of play with one interception and 145 passing yards.

MIKE APORIUS / FREE PRESS archives Winnipeg starter Stefan LeFors has looked good running the offence during the pre-season. He’ll get a sterner test in the regular-season opener July 2 against Edmonton.

LeFors was acquired in a trade with the Edmonton Eskimos in the off-season shortly after Mike Kelly left the Eskimos to take over the Bombers.

"There’s no better way for me to go back to Edmonton than to open up. It’ll be fun for me and coach Kelly and the handful of guys that came over from there," said LeFors. "This is where we make our money and this is what our job is about. They have a lot of Winnipeg guys over there that were here before so it’ll be fun."

LeFors says three weeks to learn the offence and get used to new teammates is a bit of a rush.

"I wish I had more time but that’s all they allow," said LeFors. "Just getting used to all the new receivers and to get my timing down. We’ll make the best of it."

Offensive lineman Kelly Bates said LeFors continues to impress his teammates.

"He’s got a huddle presence about himself. He’s a leader in there and he’s commanded the respect of the huddle and directed it where it needs to go," said Bates. "There’s something to be said for that. That’s where success starts. If you’re a leader on the field, sometimes things don’t go your way but Stefan has come in and done what needs to be done."

Bates says LeFors has some traits similar to longtime CFLer Dave Dickenson.

"Some of the things he does remind me of Dave," said Bates. "In the way he approaches it. Calm demeanour and accepts responsiblity for everything. That’s what a true leader does. He’s accountable."

Kelly liked the way LeFors handled his business on Tuesday night.

"He was very steady. When we were down, he knew we needed to keep performing and that radiated throughout the team," said Kelly. "That’s what we’re looking for."
