White, Meldrum, Kane only Canucks to make cut

FOURTEEN tried their best but it was three of Canada’s five LPGA Tour members who made the cut at this week’s CN Canadian Women’s Open at St. Charles.

And the greenest of them, Red Deer’s Ad­rienne White, is in the best spot she’s been in all season on the LPGA Tour after shooting a Friday 68 to reach one-over and tied for 24th.

“It’s been tough, a tough year for every­body in that scenario,” said White, who has only a non-exempt card. She’s making just her fourth start of the season. “I’ve just got to make the most of what I can get.

“I knew as soon as I got status — I missed my full card by a shot — it was going to be a tough year and I’d have to make the most of my opportunities when they came.”

White had work to do after an opening 77, but got the putter working mid-round and made five birdies in an eight-hole span.

“I know last year (in Calgary), I don’t think any of us made the cut so it feels real­ly good to be there and represent Canada on the weekend.”

White’s only previous starts were in June, July and last week in North Plains, Ore. She has made the cut in each but has made just $7,970 because she’s failed to pick up week­end ground.

The other Canadians in the weekend are Montreal’s Lisa Meldrum, the three-time Canadian Amateur champ (she won one of those at Niakwa in 2001) and P.E.I. veteran Lorie Kane.

Meldrum shot two-under 70 Friday to off­set a 77 in which she had four three-putts.

“We don’t get the opportunity to play here that much,” Meldrum said of playing in Can­ada. “This is my first time in probably three years. The crowd support yesterday was great. They ventured ahead a little bit to the group that was ahead of us (Michelle Wie) but ‘Go, Canada, Go,’ that’s fun.”

Kane had a wild ride on Friday’s back nine and got in with a 73 to make the cut right on the number, four-over 148.

“I dumped one into the woods so that everybody could give some blood to the mos­quitoes on No. 14,” Kane laughed about one of her rough spots, a double-bogey there.

On the final hole she needed a 25-foot up­hill putt for a bogey to make the cut, which she made.
