Manitoba High Schools Athletic Association
Urban: Owen Schwartz (Lord Selkirk Royals): The 6-4 left side received MVP honours in leading his team to its sixth straight volleyball tournament championship last weekend, capruting the title at the Mennonite Brethren Invitational.
Rural: Hannah Van Schie (Glenboro Panthers): A team leader in kills, the 5-9 middle player has recently led her squad to the semifinals of the Hamiota tournament and to the championship in the MacGregor tournament.
University of Manitoba Bisons
Female: Emma Thompson (basketball): The second-year forward made a significant contribution — 29 points and 16 rebounds — in her team’s split of its home-opening series against the Thompson Rivers WolfPack last weekend. The 5-11 forward is now third in team scoring with 9.8 points per game while second on the team with 7.3 rebounds per game.
Male: Daniel Heschuk (cross country): The Neepawa native had an greatly improved performance at the recent national championships in Quebec City, placing 40th (14th in Canada West) in the 10-km race on the Plains of Abraham course. In his third CIS championship appearance, Heschuk improved on his 72nd-place finish from 2015.
Manitoba AAA Midget Hockey League
Adam Swan (Interlake Lightning): In a split of two weekend games, Swan made 103 saves on 107 shots for a .963 save percentage and 1.92 goals against average. In his second season with the Lightning, he currently has a 2-5 record with two shootout losses.
Manitoba Junior Hockey League
Tyler Kirkup (Virden Oil Capitals): The 18-year-old forward had five points (two goals and three assists) in three games for the Oil Capitals, who have won two in a row. A product of the Virden hockey system, Kirkup leads his club with 24 points — nine goals and 15 assists.
University of Winnipeg Wesmen
Female: Antoinette Miller (basketball): The fourth year guard, who helped her team to a road sweep over the University of Saskatchewan Huskies last weekend, is a back-to-back winner of the award after scoring 39 points and grabbing 12 rebounds in the two victories. Miller is currently fifth in Canada West scoring, averaging 17.3 ppg.
Male: Mikael Clegg (volleyball): The second-year setter Mikael Clegg had 78 assists, 12 blocks and 11 defensive digs in a two-match road split against the No. 5-ranked University of Calgary Dinos last weekend. Clegg currently leads Canada West with 241 assists.
