Manitoba eked out a gutsy comeback victory Thursday night to remain in the hunt for a playoff spot at the Canadian mixed curling championship in Winnipeg.
The Winnipeg team, skipped by Colin Kurz, trailed British Columbia by two points through five ends, but scored one in the sixth and then stole singles in the seventh and eighth ends to register a 7-6 triumph.
Kurz’s crew of third Megan Walter, second Brendan Bilawka and lead Sara Oliver improved to 5-3 after five days of the championship at the Fort Rouge Curling Club, which features 14 teams from coast to coast and Canada’s north.
Manitoba posted a 4-2 record in round-robin play in its seven-team pool to earn a spot in the eight-team championship round. The team then crossed over to play the top four teams in the other pool.
Kurz’s team fell 5-3 Thursday afternoon to Alberta before rebounding against B.C. In the last end, a nose hit on a centre guard opened the door a crack for Manitoba, and Walter executed a terrific draw to the top of the four-foot that B.C. skip Cody Tanaka couldn’t dislodge with either of his final two rocks.
It was a must-win game for the hometown quartet from the Assiniboine Memorial Club. But things don’t get any easier today as Manitoba battles Ontario (7-1) at 10 a.m. and Nova Scotia (7-1) at 6 p.m.
Quebec is 6-2, while Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta are all 5-3. B.C. and Yukon are 4-4.
Four teams qualify for Saturday’s morning semifinals. The gold-medal game is set for Saturday afternoon.
