Golf Manitoba’s Men’s Mid-Amateur Championship is also underway at the Selkirk course, and a pair of Breezy Bend members shared the first-round lead.

Eric Johnson and Mike Tibbs fired rounds of 1-under 70 Tuesday, and they lead Curtis Markusson of St. Charles by one stroke.

Defending champion Justin McDonald, also of Breezy Bend, was tied for fourth with Dwayne Heinrichs of Bel Acres. Both golfers fired 1-over par 72s.

“I shot 72, so it’s not the worst,” McDonald said, “but I lost some shots on some easy holes.”

McDonald has been golfing since he was 13 and began playing competitively in Manitoba almost immediately. He’s been competitive nationally for the past 10 years, but says he never likes to take a day of golf too seriously.

“I just like to have fun with it, you know? Have a few beers on the course.”

The tournament wraps up on Thursday. The top three finishers will represent Manitoba at the Canadian Men’s Mid-Amateur Championship, which will be held Aug. 20-23 in Toronto.
