FARGO, N.D. — Ten days ago, the Winnipeg Goldeyes were clinging to first place in the American Association.
After Sunday’s 6-2 loss to the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks before 438 fans at Newman Outdoor Field, the once frisky Fish have lost nine consecutive games to tie a franchise record and are in danger of missing the post-season with nine games remaining in the 2020 regular season.
The loss dropped fourth-place Winnipeg to 25-26 and 3 1/2 games behind the first-place Milwaukee Milkmen and two games behind the second-place Sioux Falls Canaries. Both the Milkmen and Canaries were in action Sunday night.
The RedHawks, winners of seven straight, are fifth in the six-team loop with a 24-27 record.
The top two regular-season teams in the American Association will meet in a best-of-seven league championship series beginning Sept. 12.
Redhawks starter Matt Tomshaw (5-3) pitched nine-inning complete game for the victory, scattering five hits, two runs, two walks while striking out four.
Goldeyes starter Brandon Cumpton (2-3) allowed nine hits and six runs in 4 2/3 innings. He also walked four and strike out one.
Leobalda Pina drove in a pair of runs for Fargo while teammate Correlle Prime went 3-for-5 with an RBI and two runs. The RedHawks outhit the Goldeyes 10-5.
Kent Hasler tossed 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief for Winnipeg before giving way to newly signed right-hander Josh Lucas. Lucas, a former major leaguer, gave up one hit, one walk and struck out one in a three-inning stint.
Lucas, a 29-year-old from Lakeland, Fla., native, made nine major league appearances for the Baltimore Orioles in 2019, striking out 16 batters in 15 2/3 innings.
Lucas also reached the majors in 2017 with the St. Louis Cardinals and with the Oakland Athletics in 2018.
The Goldeyes have a day off Monday before taking on the Chicago Dogs in the first game of a three-game series Tuesday night in Rosemount, Ill.
NOTES: Winnipeg’s nine-game losing skid is tied for the franchise record established in 2018.
