ATHENS — Canada’s unbeaten run at the FINA Women’s World League Super Final ended with a 14-10 semifinal loss to Hungary Friday afternoon.

The Canadians, unbeaten in three round-robin games earlier, advanced to the semifinals by hammering Kazakhstan 11-3 in quarter-final action Thursday.

Kyra Christmas of High River, Alta., had three goals for Canada Friday while former Winnipegger Shae La Roche, now of Laval, Que., Monika Eggens of Pitt Meadows, B.C., and Emma Wright of Lindsay, Ont., scored twice each. Calgary’s Kelly McKee added a single in a losing cause.

“We started strongly but they rapidly adjusted defensively and we were unsettled,” Canadian head coach David Paradelo told Water Polo Canada. “It became much harder for our team from that point. Hungary has a good team.”

Canada will face Russia in the bronze-medal game Saturday morning while Hungary takes on the powerhouse American squad for gold.

The tournament is the final competitive tune-up for the Canadians, who have qualified for next month’s Tokyo Summer Olympics.

Earlier, Canada finished first in its group at the preliminary round with Wednesday’s 13-12 victory over Hungarians, No. 1 ranked in the world. Canada also beat Japan 16-10 and Russia 12-10.

Christmas of High River, Alta., had four goals in Wednesday’s win over Hungary while La Roche and Hayley Mckelvey of North Delta, B.C., had three apiece.
