Team Canada’s women’s water polo team broke out in a big way Wednesday for its first victory of the Olympic tournament in Tokyo.
Gurpreet Sohi scored four goals and Winnipeg’s Shae La Roche added two more to lead the Canadians to a 21-1 blowout win over South Africa at the Tatsumi Water Polo Centre.
It was the first win by the Canadian women at the Olympics since Aug. 18, 2004, when they beat the Americans 6-5 in Athens.

Kyra Christmas added a hat trick for the winners while Monika Eggens, Axelle Crevier, Elyse Lemay-Lavoie and Kindred Paul had two apiece. Hayley Mckelvey, Joelle Bekhazi, Kelly Mckee and Emma Wright chipped in with singles.
The triumph improved Canada’s record to 1-2 with Sunday’s matchup against the Netherlands as its lone remaining preliminary round game.
Canada is third in Group A and must finish in the top four to reach the tournament quarterfinals.
