STAR attacker Gabrielle Attieh hammered 15 kills to lead the Fraser Valley Cascades to a 25-20, 25-16, 25-19 sweep of the Winnipeg Wesmen in Canada West university women’s volleyball playoff action at Duckworth Centre Saturday night.
The victory evened the best-of-three conference quarterfinal at 1-1.
The fourth-seeded Wesmen will host a decisive third match will be played Sunday at 1 p.m.
Lauren Attieh had 13 kills and Natalie Lemoine-Sell added eight for the fifth-seeded Cascades.
Middle Haille Bujan had a team-high six kills for the Wesmen while Emma Parker and Ashleigh Laube and five and four kills, respectively.
In other women’s action Saturday, the No. 6 Manitoba Bisons completed a quarterfinal sweep of third-seeded UBC, getting 23 kills and 14 digs from Raya Surinx en route to beating the Thunderbirds 25-23-18-25, 25-20, 25-22 in Vancouver.
On Friday, Surinx had 21 kills to lead Manitoba to a 25-18, 25-22, 19-25 23-25, 15-11 triumph in the opening match of the best-of-three series.
In men’s action Friday night, the top-seeded Alberta Golden Bears completed a two-match sweep of eighth-seeded Manitoba by eking out a 25-17, 25-17, 20-25, 26-28, 15-13 victory in Edmonton.
Jack Mandryk led the Bisons with 45 assists and four kills in the match.
