The Winnipeg Sea Bears had a nice streak going for a while but have now suffered back-to-back defeats.
The Sea Bears fell 110-78 to the Calgary Surge out west Sunday afternoon, dropping to 3-3 and fourth place in the Western Conference of the Canadian Elite Basketbal League.
Winnipeg had posted three consecutive wins before falling to the Niagara River Lions on Thursday.
After a tight first half, the Surge took control of the game after the intermission, scoring 14 straight points to take a 60-46 lead early in the third quarter in front of 2,586 fans at Calgary’s WinSport Event Centre.
The Sea Bears couldn’t recover, allowing the most points against them all season.
“Disappointed in our second half,” said Sea Bears GM and head coach Mike Taylor, by phone. “We looked to make some adjustments and, unfortunately, we were not able to carry those adjustments off to the court.”
Surge guard Sean Miller-Moore had a strong performance with a team-leading 25 points, four assists and six rebounds.
The squads were knotted 25-25 at the end of the opening quarter and tied 46-46 after the second. But Calgary proved deadly from long range, with nine three-pointer in the third.
“It was more about us not executing against their defence the way we needed to,” said Taylor. “It just got them hot, gave them easy baskets. So for us, it’s more about our performance, we need to work better together on the offensive end.”
Sea Bears guard Jarred Ogungbemi-Jackson led the team for the second game in a row with 18 points, along with three assists and three rebounds.
Star guard Teddy Allen, who was ejected on a technical foul in the loss to the Lions, had 16 points, four assists and three rebounds.
Guard Mason Bourcier also hit double digits against his former team with 12, his second-highest tally of the season.
“Mason was really ready to play,” said Taylor. “He was one of the guys we felt really defended, really competed … he was one of the bright spots in our game (Sunday).”
The Sea Bears finish a four-game road trip against the Vancouver Bandits on Thursday.
“We’ve got a lot of experience in that locker room, and guys will know how to bounce back,” Taylor said.
