The Winnipeg Goldeyes have added some local flavour to their roster.

Ben Onyshko, 27, is joining the Fish after being released by the Seattle Mariners organization earlier this month.

The left-handed pitcher, who was drafted by the big-league club in the 24th round in 2018, was in the middle of his third season of Double-A with the Arkansas Travelers of the Texas League. He appeared in 77 games at that level, including three starts, with a 4-3 record and 5.17 ERA.

“We’re thrilled to add Ben to our roster,” Goldeyes manager Logan Watkins said Friday in a media release. “Not only is it exciting to get an experienced arm on our pitching staff but it’s an even bigger addition because he’s from Winnipeg. I know he will bring a lot of passion and pride to play for his hometown team and I expect great things from him.”

To make room for Onyshko on the active roster, the Goldeyes have traded right-handed relief pitcher Brady Schanuel to the Cleburne Railroaders in exchange for a player to be named later. He appeared in nine games with Winnipeg this season, compiling an 0-1 record with a 6.75 earned-run-average.

Winnipeg (16-15) kicked off a season-long nine-game homestand on Friday night at Blue Cross Park against the Sioux City Explorers.
