The Winnipeg Blue Bombers are adding one of their greatest defenders in franchise history to their Ring of Honour at this year’s Banjo Bowl on Sept. 6.
The club announced Wednesday that rush end/linebacker Tyrone Jones will become the 17th member of the Ring of Honour at Princess Auto Stadium.
Jones is the all-time franchise leader in quarterback sacks, a two-time Grey Cup champion (1984 and 1990), the CFL’s Most Outstanding Defensive Player in 1985, and a four-time CFL all-star. The St. Mary’s, Ga., product suited up for the Blue and Gold from 1983-87 and 1989-91.
WINNIPEG BLUE BOMBERS
Tyrone Jones remains the Blue Bombers all-time leader in quarterback sacks.
He died in 2008 at the age of 46 from brain cancer.
Jones was inducted into the Winnipeg Football Club Hall of Fame in 1999 and the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 2012.
“I was just a baby when he played football and never got the chance to see him play,” said Tyler Livingston, one of Jones’ three sons, in a press release. “I have seen clips and videos that he had shared with me over the years, and I know from James West that those were good times in Winnipeg.
“The Blue Bombers, that’s all I used to hear about from my dad. I still tell people to this day that my father is in the hall of fame in Canada for football so to be added to the Blue Bombers Ring of Honour makes me even more proud of him.”
