Carillon bats dominate in MJBL Final opener

The Manitoba Junior Baseball League has a familiar match-up in the finals. The best-of-five series this year features the Carillon Sultans taking on the Elmwood Giants for the third consecutive year.

The Sultans, based out of Steinbach, have won the past two championships and cruised to first place in the regular season in their attempt to round out a three-peat.

The best-of-five series kicked off in Steinbach at A.D. Penner Park on Friday night, with Carillon’s offence the difference, as they racked up 13 hits and in a 15-5 mercy rule victory as darkness fell on the diamond.

The Sultans took a 7-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning but let Elmwood back into the game when they got within two in the top of the fifth. Carillon responded by hitting around in the bottom half, scoring six runs and sealing the victory.

Cedric Lagasse got the ball for the Sultans and earned the victory. The two-time MJBL playoff most valuable player had a slow night by his usual standards. He pitched two complete game shutouts in the semifinals against St. Boniface, conceding just three hits over 13 innings of work.

The Giants were able to chase Lagasse after five innings on Friday, recording seven hits and five earned runs against the graduating righty.

Ryland Stepien got the start for the Giants, but lasted just three innings, with Carillon drawing long at-bats early in the game to rack up the righty’s pitch count.

Cody Weilgosh, Cody Gunderson and Anders Meilleur all had three RBIs for Carillon in the win. Meilleur capped off the opening barrage for the Sultans with a single that slipped under the Elmwood centre-fielder’s glove. By the time the Giants were able to retrieve the ball and get it back to the plate, Meilleur was crossing the plate.

First pitch for Game 2 is set for 1 p.m. at Koskie Field in Elmwood on Sunday.
