Winnipeg has pulled out as the host city of an international LGBTTQ* sporting event set for 2020 after Miami abruptly cancelled this year’s event, leaving athletes and fans in the dark just hours before it was meant to begin.
“With the incident that happened in Miami this past June and how the athletes were treated, we feel bad that we are no longer in a position to deliver an exceptional experience for LGBTTQ* athletes under the OutGames banner,” Jonathan Niemczak, chairman of the 2020 North America OutGames planning committee, said in a news release Thursday.
The OutGames is a 10-day event for LGBTTQ* athletes that takes place every four years, with more than 450 events across sport, culture and human rights.
“The planning committee is very disappointed with how the cancellation of the Miami World OutGames unfolded, and as a result, we cannot support going forward with hosting an OutGames event,” the news release states.
The committee plans to redirect its efforts to create a new Canadian LGBTTQ* multi-sporting event in Winnipeg as part of the Canada Pride Festival in 2020.
Niemczak said more information on the new event will be released early next year.
