Nothing about the start to George Springer’s Blue Jays career has come quickly or easily.

It took months of free agency to put pen to paper on a franchise-record six-year, $150-million (U.S.) deal last January. And then the 31-year-old outfielder had to wait nearly a month to make his regular-season debut, sidelined by injuries.

Well, fans, the wait is finally over.

Springer will play his first regular-season game as a member of the Blue Jays on Wednesday night against the Washington Nationals at TD Ballpark in Dunedin, Fla. First pitch is scheduled for 7:07 p.m.

He will hit leadoff as the team’s designated hitter.

“Just excited to get out there and go through the daily grind with these guys,” Springer said during a conference call on Wednesday afternoon. “It’s not fun not being on a trip or not being able to play.”

Springer, who will wear No. 4, went 6-for-25 with a home run, two RBIs, two walks and five strikeouts during spring training before an oblique strain. He was close to a return in early April, but a stint on the injured list was extended after a low-grade quadriceps strain, diagnosed after feeling tightness while running the bases during rehab.

A three-time all-star, Springer was a career .270 hitter with an .852 OPS in six seasons with the Houston Astros. He was MVP of their World Series-winning squad in 2017, a title tainted by a cheating scandal.
