Blue Jays catcher Alejandro Kirk will be out for at least the next four weeks because of a strained hip flexor.

General manager Ross Atkins made the announcement during a Thursday afternoon media availability. Kirk has been out since May 1 with the injury and he was placed on the 10-day injured list the following day.

The promising rookie has appeared in 17 games for the Blue Jays this season while hitting .225 with three home runs and eight RBIs. During his absence, Danny Jansen and the recently promoted Reese McGuire are expected to split time behind the plate.

“It is expected to be at least four weeks of him coming back from that injury, and it could be longer,” Atkins admitted. “We’re excited to see Reese play and see if his contactability and his confidence as a defender can help us improve in that area. We’ll definitely take an extended look at Reese, but we always have to be open if there are ways to make our team better.”

The Jays also placed right-hander David Phelps on the 10-day injured list with a right lat strain, which made room on the active roster for starter Hyun-Jin Ryu who had been out with a right glute issue.
