Blue Jays starter Steven Matz was placed on MLB’s COVID-19 list Sunday after an inconclusive test result Saturday night.
Matz was isolated and symptom-free as he underwent additional testing, according to the club.
“The unvaccinated players that we have and the close contacts, they all rapid-tested today and they all came back negative, so that’s good news,” manager Charlie Montoyo said after Sunday’s 18-4 win in Boston.
Citing privacy concerns, the manager didn’t say if Matz had been vaccinated. There is no minimum stay on the COVID list. Players can return once they’re cleared.
Right-hander Jeremy Beasley, already in Boston with the team, was activated in Matz’s place for Sunday’s game and pitched one inning, conceding a walk but nothing else. Montoyo said the Jays may need a bullpen day if Matz isn’t available for his next start.
The 30-year-old Matz earned his seventh win of the season Saturday in Boston. He owns a 4.62 ERA over 69 2/3 innings in his first season with the Jays.
