The Blue Jays will be without left-hander Brad Hand for their three-game series in Detroit this weekend, the Star has learned.
The reliever will be placed on the bereavement list before Friday night’s game following his grandfather’s death.
Hand has had a rough time since being acquired by the Blue Jays at last month’s trade deadline for rookie catcher Riley Adams. The 31-year-old has appeared in 11 games and posted an ERA of 7.27, allowing three home runs in 8 2/3 innings pitched.
He has two losses and a blown save, and also issued a walk-off bases-loaded walk in Seattle, which appears in neither of those columns.
He gave up two runs and three hits in two-thirds of an inning Thursday in the 10-7 loss to the White Sox.
Hand led the major leagues in saves in 2020, notching 16 for Cleveland in the pandemic-shortened season, and had 21 saves this season for Washington, having posted a sparkling ERA of 1.52 from May 22 to July 20 until his current struggles began. He has a 9.49 ERA in 15 appearances since then, having been scored upon in over half of those outings.
Rookie Connor Overton, optioned out after throwing three shutout innings of relief on Tuesday, has not left the team and is likely to be activated in Hand’s place.
The veteran southpaw will rejoin the Blue Jays when they come home from Detroit to open a six-game homestand against Baltimore and Oakland on Aug. 30.
