Three things you need to know about the Blue Jays’ 1-0 win over the Boston Red Sox at the Rogers Centre on Thursday:
One and done
The only run of the ball game was scored in the bottom of the third inning, thanks to a Red Sox error. Lourdes Gurriel Jr. hit a one-out ground ball to shortstop and Christian Arroyo whiffed on it as he tried to play it on his backhand.
Arroyo was making his third start of the season at short, but only his fourth since 2017. He has also made starts at second, third and right field this season.
Raimel Tapia, making his first career start as a clean-up hitter, worked a walk to push Gurriel into scoring position and an out later Alejandro Kirk lashed a single to left to score him. That was it. The Blue Jays would only get one more runner as far as second base in the game, when Matt Chapman doubled with two out in the fifth.
Beast of the East
Jays right-hander Alek Manoah was brilliant against a divisional rival yet again. He followed up six innings of one-hitter at Yankee Stadium back on April 11 with seven innings of three-hitter against the Red Sox. He has yet to allow a run against the American League East this season.
Over the course of his career, 13 of Manoah’s 24 starts have been against East teams and he has shut down the Red Sox, New York Yankees, Tampa Bay Rays and Baltimore Orioles to the tune of a 1.88 ERA.
Astonishingly, his 3.31 ERA in three starts against Baltimore is his worst mark.
Another squeaker
While this was the Jays’ first 1-0 game of the season, it was their ninth one-run game and 12th decided by two or fewer in 20 sorties.
With the win, they’re now 7-2 in one-run contests. In their 91-win season last year, they were 15-15.
The Houston Astros come to town next, for a three-game series starting Friday night.
