A late comeback forced extra innings, but the Winnipeg Goldeyes fell just short in an 8-7 defeat to the Kansas City Monarchs on Saturday at Shaw Park.
The Fish trailed 5-1 after six innings before batting in a pair of runs in the seventh and eighth frames to knot the game. The two clubs traded scores in the 10th inning before the Monarchs batted in two runs in the 11th inning, which proved to be enough to earn its third-straight win.
The Goldeyes dropped to 11-15 on the season and find themselves in a bit of a tailspin, losers in seven of its last 10 contests. Meanwhile, the Monarchs won their third straight to improve to 17-9.
Goldeyes’ third-basemen Dayson Croes, who went three-for-five with a walk and two runs batted in, extended his hitting streak to 23 games and is now just four games shy of the club record of 27 held by Luis Ortiz (2001) and Brent Metheny (2008). Croes owns a .378 average this season.
The Goldeyes and Monarch wrap up the three-game weekend series Sunday at Shaw Park (1 p.m.).
