Bohm’s RBI double in 10th inning helps Phillies edge Cardinals 5-3

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Alec Bohm had an RBI double in the 10th inning and the Philadelphia Phillies beat the St. Louis Cardinals 5-3 on Monday night.

Bohm’s hit off Ryan Helsley (1-1) drove in automatic runner Cristian Pache, and Bryson Stott followed with a sacrifice fly for the insurance run as the Phillies won for the third time in their last four games.

“Bohm’s hit, the sac fly by Stott, I mean that’s a great at bat off a really good reliever, I mean one of the best in the game,” Phillies manager Rob Thomson said. “So, I was really happy with the fight that we had tonight.”

Gregory Soto got the last three outs for his first save.

The Cardinals rallied for two runs in the bottom of the ninth off Jeff Hoffman (1-0) to tie it. Jordan Walker drove in the first run with a sacrifice fly and Masyn Winn’s two-out single tied it 3-all.

“It was a good comeback,” Cardinals first baseman Paul Goldschmidt said. “Philly’s bullpen’s one of the best on the league and their starters as well, so to be down two and to tie it up and have a chance to win it in the ninth or the 10th, you know, after being down most of the game was a good job.”

The rally spoiled the second straight scoreless start for Phillies starter Spencer Turnbull, who allowed just two hits in six inning while striking out six.

Cardinals starter Miles Mikolas allowed two runs and six hits in 6 2/3 innings.

Turnbull hasn’t allowed a run in 11 innings pitched this season, after tossing five scoreless against Cincinnati in his Phillies debut on April 2. The outings are his first two of at least five scoreless innings since throwing a no-hitter with Detroit on May 18, 2021.

“I feel like I’m mixing all my pitches in pretty good,” Turnbull said. “I’m throwing a lot of strikes. And like anytime I get in some bad counts or give up a hit or something, I’ve been able to make some good pitches to help get out of it, so happy with that.”

Turnbull pitched around a leadoff double by Nolan Arenado in the second and struck out two to wriggle out of a jam in third.

“He’s given us two really good starts,” Thomson said. “We’ve won them both. Yeah, at the start of spring training, we really weren’t sure what he was going to do. Was he going to be a long man in our bullpen of start on Triple-A to give us depth. … so he’s done a great job for us.”

The Phillies took a 2-0 lead in the fifth off four singles. Johan Rojas, who made a diving catch in center in the first, and Trea Turner had the RBI singles.

Rojas tied a career-high with three hits and has hit safely in five consecutive games against St. Louis, which lost its second straight game.

“I’m thankful just to be here,” Rojas said through an interpreter. “And you know what we can do is, I can keep working hard every day, no matter what happens. You know, always try to get my 100%. That’s what I do, and help the team win.”

Iván Herrera greeted reliever Seranthony Domínguez with a home run to lead off the seventh and pull the Cardinals within one. Herrera’s second of the season grazed the top of Brandon Marsh’s glove before clearing the left field wall.

Marsh had a solo homer off Giovanny Gallegos in the ninth to give the Phillies a 3-1 lead.

RHP Sonny Gray (debut) will make his first start for the Cardinals against RHP Zack Wheeler (0-1, 0.75 ERA) and the Phillies on Tuesday night. Gray is working his way back from a right hamstring strain suffered in spring training, while Wheeler is 4-2 with a 2.44 ERA in seven career starts against St. Louis.
