DETROIT (AP) — Framber Valdez pitched seven strong innings and the Houston Astros used a four-run eighth inning to rally past the Detroit Tigers 5-2 on Friday night.

Kyle Tucker homered and scored twice for Houston, which has won two in a row after a four-game skid.

Valdez (2-1) allowed two runs and six hits in seven innings. He has a 2.49 ERA in eight career games against the Tigers, including seven starts.

Detroit (19-19) has lost six of seven and fell to .500 for the first time this season.

Trailing 2-1, Jose Altuve started the eighth with a single off Andrew Chafin (2-1) and Tucker walked before Yordan Alvarez tied it with a single down the right-field line. Jason Foley replaced Chafin, but Jeremy Peña hit an RBI single on his first pitch.

Jon Singleton hit into a force at second, putting runners on the corners, and Alex Bregman’s grounder to third went through Matt Vierling’s legs for an error. Yanier Diaz followed with a sacrifice fly to make it 5-2.

Bryan Abreu pitched the eighth for Houston and Josh Hader earned his fifth save after closing out the ninth.

YANKEES 2, RAYS 0

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Clarke Schmidt allowed five hits in 6 2/3 innings, Anthony Rizzo homered and drove in two runs, and the New York Yankees beat Tampa Bay.

Schmidt (4-1) struck out six and walked two as he extended his season-opening run of allowing three or fewer runs to eight starts.

Yankees closer Clay Holmes had a stressful ninth inning. He walked two batters with one out and struck out Isaac Paredes looking before pinch-hitter Austin Shenton singled to load the bases. Holmes then struck out Jonny DeLuca to secure his 12th save in 13 chances and complete a six-hitter.

Rizzo had a fourth-inning RBI single and connected on a first-pitch homer against Shawn Armstrong leading off the ninth to help the Yankees win for the sixth time in seven games.

Rays starter Taj Bradley (0-1) gave up one run, four hits and struck out seven over six innings in his season debut. The right-hander had been on the 15-day injured list with a right pectoral strain.

TWINS 3, BLUE JAYS 2

TORONTO (AP) — Carlos Santana hit a tiebreaking home run in the fifth inning, Joe Ryan pitched seven innings and Minnesota won for the 16th time in 18 games by beating Toronto.

Carlos Correa had two hits and scored twice as the Twins won for the ninth time in their past 13 games in Toronto.

Jose Miranda added an RBI single as the Twins, who successfully brought their lucky sausage across the Canadian border, extended their road winning streak to seven.

Ryan (2-2) allowed one run and one hit for his first victory in three starts. He struck out seven and did not give up a walk.

Jhoan Duran worked the eighth and Griffin Jax pitched the ninth for his fifth save in seven chances.

Isiah Kiner-Falefa had three hits, including his second home run, but the Blue Jays lost for the sixth time in eight games. Toronto won at Philadelphia on Wednesday but the Blue Jays haven’t won back-to-back games since home wins over the Dodgers on April 28 and Kansas City on April 29.

ORIOLES 4, DIAMONDBACKS 2

BALTIMORE (AP) — Cole Irvin pitched into the sixth inning in another effective start, and a reshuffled bullpen held on for Baltimore Orioles in a victory over Arizona.

Struggling reliever Craig Kimbrel was taken out of the closer’s role for this game, but he worked a perfect seventh inning. Jacob Webb retired two batters in the eighth, but then walked a batter. Cionel Pérez came on and hit pinch-hitter Joc Pederson with a pitch before Eugenio Suárez hit a routine grounder to end the threat.

Yennier Cano then pitched around a leadoff double in the ninth for his second save.

Arizona’s four-game winning streak was halted. The AL East-leading Orioles have won six of seven.

Ketel Marte hit a solo homer in the third for Arizona, extending his hitting streak to 11 games.

NATIONALS 5, RED SOX 1

BOSTON (AP) — Patrick Corbin allowed one run in five innings for his first victory of the season, Trey Lipscomb had a two-run single and Washington beat Boston.

Corbin (1-3) allowed seven hits and a walk and had four strikeouts in lowering his ERA from 6.45 to 5.91. He allowed runners to reach in four of five innings, helped in the first when right fielder Victor Robles threw out a runner at home for the final out.

Robles and Eddie Rosario each had two hits to help the Nationals move over .500 for the second time this season at 19-18.

Garrett Cooper doubled in Boston’s lone run. Red Sox starter Tanner Houck (3-4) ran into two-out trouble on two occasions, but delivered seven innings of three-run ball. The right-hander struck out four and threw 65 of his 95 pitches for strikes.

Boston stranded 11 and went 1 for 9 with runners in scoring position. The Red Sox have lost six of seven to drop to 19-19.

WHITE SOX 6, GUARDIANS 3

CHICAGO (AP) — Garrett Crochet struck out 11 in six shutout innings and the Chicago White Sox beat Cleveland for their third consecutive victory.

Taking advantage of a costly error on second baseman Gabriel Arias, Chicago improved to 8-6 since its ugly 3-22 start. Korey Lee and Paul DeJong hit back-to-back homers in the seventh, and Andrew Vaughn went deep in the eighth for his first of the season.

Crochet (3-4) allowed five hits and walked none in his second straight win. Jordan Leasure got four outs for his second save.

Cleveland lost for the third time in four games. It leads the AL Central by a half-game over Minnesota, which beat Toronto 3-2 for its third straight win.

PHILLIES 8, MARLINS 2

MIAMI (AP) — Ranger Suárez pitched seven scoreless innings, Nick Castellanos and Johan Rojas hit solo homers, and Philadelphia beat Miami Marlins.

Rojas and J.T. Realmuto each had three of Philadelphia’s 15 hits. Bryce Harper had two hits, including an RBI double. Kyle Schwarber and Cristian Pache had two apiece.

Suárez (7-0), who entered the game with a 1.72 ERA, allowed just three hits while striking out nine and walking two. Gregory Soto replaced Suárez in the eighth and allowed a two-run double to Josh Bell that ended the shutout bid.

BRAVES 4, METS 2

NEW YORK (AP) — Ronald Acuña Jr. hit a titanic home run, just before Ozzie Albies and Matt Olson also went deep in the third inning, and Atlanta beat the New York Mets.

Charlie Morton (3-0) pitched seven splendid innings as the teams played through raindrops in a game delayed 55 minutes at the start. Atlanta won its third straight since getting swept at Dodger Stadium last weekend, with two off days in between.

Francisco Lindor homered on Morton’s first pitch in the seventh, one of only three hits off the 40-year-old right-hander. He struck out seven and walked one in his fourth consecutive quality start, surpassing 2,000 innings in the majors.

A.J. Minter struck out all three batters in the eighth. Raisel Iglesias got three outs for his 10th save in 12 chances this season and the 200th of his career.

CUBS 7, PIRATES 2

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Cody Bellinger had four hits, including his seventh home run of the season, and the Chicago Cubs surged past Pittsburgh.

Bellinger turned on a 100 mph fastball from Jared Jones (2-4) in the first inning and sent it into the right-field seats for the Cubs. He later added two doubles and an RBI single and is hitting .538 (7 for 13) since returning from fractured ribs.

Ian Happ and Chris Morel had two hits apiece for the Cubs, who have won four of six. Happ, a Pittsburgh native, continued to torment his hometown team. His infield hit in the fourth extended his on-base streak against the Pirates to 60 games, a major-league record by one player against one opponent. He later added an RBI double and is now hitting .322 in 96 career games against Pittsburgh.

Nick Madrigal added a two-run single for the Cubs during a four-run seventh that broke it open. Ben Brown (1-1) worked 3 2/3 scoreless innings in relief of starter Javier Assad to pick up his first major league win.

Nick Gonzales had a two-run single on the day he was recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis. Oneil Cruz had two hits for the Pirates. Pittsburgh has lost three straight and 17 of 23.

BREWERS 11, CARDINALS 2

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Robert Gasser allowed just two hits over six shutout innings in his major league debut and the Milwaukee trounced St. Louis to hand the Cardinals their sixth consecutive loss.

Willy Adames hit three doubles with two runs and a pair of RBIs as the Brewers beat the Cardinals for a seventh straight time, continuing a streak that began last year. William Contreras scored three times, Christian Yelich had two runs and Rhys Hoskins and Jake Bauers each delivered two RBIs.

Gasser walked none, hit one batter and became just the fifth Brewer ever to throw at least six shutout innings in his debut. The others were Jim Slaton in 1974, Steve Woodard in 1997, Chris Sáenz in 2004 and Brandon Woodruff in 2017.

Milwaukee acquired Gasser, along with outfielder Eury Pérez and pitcher Dinelson Lamet in the 2022 trade that sent star closer Josh Hader to the San Diego Padres.

The 24-year-old left-hander continued the Cardinals’ scoring woes. St. Louis has scored 129 runs through its first 38 games. The Chicago White Sox are the only MLB team with fewer runs this season.

Nolan Gorman homered for the Cardinals, who totaled just five hits.

ROCKIES 4, RANGERS 2

DENVER (AP) — Charlie Blackmon hit a go-ahead two-run double in the eighth inning to lift Colorado to a victory against.

The Rockies earned consecutive victories for the first time this season. They had been the only team yet to win back-to-back games and the 37-game streak without consecutive victories was the longest drought in franchise history.

Blackmon had just 12 hits in his previous 69 at-bats — an average of .174 — when he came up against Yerry Rodríguez with runners on first and second base and two outs and the game tied at 2. He hit a sharp line drive to center field that brought Brenton Doyle and Jake Cave home to break a 2-2 tie.

Elías Díaz had two hits and an RBI for the Rockies, his 13th multihit game of the season and his 20th RBI, both team highs. Doyle and Brendan Rodgers each added two hits for Colorado.

Jake Bird (1-1) earned the win in relief for the Rockies, while Grant Anderson (0-1) took the loss for the Rangers.

Jalen Beeks retired the side in order in the ninth for his second save of the season.

The loss temporarily halted a recent hot streak for the defending World Series champion Rangers, who had won five of their last six and eight of 11.

Corey Seager hit his fourth home run of the season for Texas, a sharp 403-foot shot to right field that came off his bat at 108.2 mph. Seager, who drove in both of the Rangers’ runs, entered the game with hits in just 10 of his previous 66 at-bats.

PADRES 2, DODGERS 1

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Newcomer Luis Arraez singled in pinch runner Tyler Wade with one out in the ninth inning and the San Diego beat Los Angeles to end the Dodgers’ season-high seven-game winning streak.

Arraez was obtained in a trade with Miami last Saturday and was playing his first home game with the Padres. He singled to center field off Michael Grove (1-2) to bring in Wade and set off a wild celebration. Wade was pinch running for Luis Campusano, who hit a leadoff double to left.

Robert Suarez (2-0) pitched a perfect ninth for the win.

San Diego’s Michael King and Los Angeles’ Tyler Glasnow dueled through seven innings.

King tied his season high with 11 strikeouts and held the high-priced, normally high-powered Dodgers to just two hits in seven scoreless innings. He allowed four home runs in an extra-inning win at Dodger Stadium on April 12.

Glasnow allowed just one hit, but it was a 429-foot home run by Campusano in the third. He struck out 10 for the second straight start and third time in four outings.

ROYALS 2, ANGELS 1

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Adam Frazier hit a two-run homer in the ninth inning and Kansas City rallied for a victory over the hapless Los Angeles Angels.

MJ Melendez delivered a one-out single off Angels closer Carlos Estévez (0-2) before Frazier put his first homer in 31 games this season into the short porch in right field. Frazier hadn’t homered in 74 games since last July 30 with Baltimore.

Melendez had three hits for Kansas City, which has won three straight and seven of 10. Tyler Duffey (1-0) pitched the eighth.

Jo Adell homered and Griffin Canning pitched 5 2/3 scoreless innings for the Angels, who have lost 16 of 21 after Estévez’s third blown save in his last six opportunities.

SEATTLE 8, ATHLETICS 1

SEATTLE (AP) — Dylan Moore hit a two-run homer and had a career-high five RBIs to help the Seattle Mariners beat the Oakland Athletics 8-1 on Friday night.

While the Mariners rebounded to open a brief homestand after losing three of four in Minnesota, the immediate concern was the status of starting pitcher Bryan Woo after he left with one out in the fifth inning.

Making his first start of the year after being slowed by a sore elbow during spring training, Woo allowed just one hit through the first four innings only to leave the game after getting Tyler Soderstrom to foul out behind third base to open the fifth.

Trent Thornton (1-1), Kirby Snead and Cody Bolton kept the shutout going until the ninth when Lawrence Butler’s two-out RBI single off Austin Voth plated Oakland’s only run.

After cruising through the first three innings, Blackburn (3-2) ran into trouble immediately in the fourth walking Mitch Haniger and Cal Raleigh.

Luke Raley barely missed a three-run homer and settled for an RBI double off the top of the wall. Ty France lined a two-run double and Moore hit his third homer of the season just inside the foul pole in left.

REDS 4, GIANTS 2

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Pinch-hitter Stuart Fairchild had an inside-the-park homer that provided a key insurance run late to help left-hander Andrew Abbott win for the first time in almost a month, and Cincinnati snapped an eight-game losing streak by beating San Francisco.

Left fielder Michael Conforto and center fielder Tyler Fitzgerald each tried to run down Fairchild’s flyball to left-center off Erik Miller, but the ball caromed off the wall between them and kicked back before Fitzgerald retrieved it and hit shortstop Casey Schmitt. Diving headfirst, Fairchild just beat the relay throw.

It was the first inside-the-park homer at Oracle Park since Tampa Bay’s Luke Raley on Aug. 16 last year, sixth by an opponent and 13th overall.

TJ Friedl hit a go-ahead double in the fourth for Cincinnati, which had lost 11 of 13.

Elly De La Cruz stole two more bases to bring his majors-leading total to 25. He has six over the past three games.

Thairo Estrada homered in the first for San Francisco, which couldn’t provide enough support for Logan Webb (3-4). The right-hander lost at home for the first time in four starts after beginning 2-0.
