TORONTO – Jose Soriano’s stingy 7 2/3 innings and Jo Adell’s two solo homers pushed the Los Angeles Angels to a 6-1 win over the Toronto Blue Jays on Sunday to avoid being swept in the three-game series.

Soriano (6-2) struck out seven and only gave up a run on five hits with a walk for the Angels (16-25) after Toronto (18-22) claimed the first two games of the series.

After beginning the season with five straight wins, Soriano’s 103-pitch effort before 40,977 at Rogers Centre gave him his first victory since April 17.

Toronto third-baseman Kazuma Okamoto drove his team’s only run in the first inning to extend his hit streak to nine games.

After Oswald Peraza’s two-run homer off Eric Lauer (1-5) in the fifth inning, Vaughn Grissom doubled in two more runs.

Adell slammed a one-out solo shot in the sixth off Lauer. He belted his second of the game to start the ninth.

Spencer Miles opened for the Blue Jays and pitched a strong three innings. Tommy Vance enjoyed a clean fourth.

Lauer surrendered his six runs in five innings on five hits, two walks, and four strikeouts.

Takeaways

Blue Jays: Addison Barger couldn’t make it to the starting gate because of right elbow soreness. Barger’s elbow was wrapped in ice after his return Saturday from a 29-game absence due to a sprained left ankle. He recorded a second-inning outfield assist in his return.

Angels: After Soriano issued a two-out walk to Jesus Sanchez in the first inning, the next 20 Blue Jays were retired in order. Miles Straw’s one-out infield hit in the eighth snapped Soriano’s run.

Key moment

In for Soriano, Angels reliever Sam Bachman coaxed Vladimir Guerrero Jr. into a weak grounder to third with two out and the bases loaded to end the eighth-inning threat.

Key stat

After a 0-for-4 afternoon, Guerrero was stuck at two homers and 17 runs-batted in for the season. At this point last year, he had four homers and 18 RBI.

Up next

Toronto veteran Kevin Gausman (2-2) will open the three-game series at home against right-hander Drew Rasmussen (2-1) and the Tampa Bay Rays on Monday.
