Guardians continue their home dominance of Angels with a win

CLEVELAND (AP) — Joey Cantillo pitched six scoreless innings, rookie Travis Bazzana capped a five-run third inning with a two-run double and the Cleveland Guardians defeated the Los Angeles Angels 7-2 on Monday night.

Cantillo (3-1) allowed five hits, walked one and struck out four.

Brayan Rocchio put the Guardians ahead 2-0 when he greeted reliever Jose Fermin with a single in the second inning after opener Brent Suter was lifted.

The Guardians had a five-run outburst in the third inning, taking advantage of four walks, to extend their lead to 7-0. David Fry drew a bases-loaded walk and Daniel Schneemann hit a two-run single before Bazzana capped the rally by lining his two-run double to center field. Bazzana was the first pick in the 2024 amateur draft.

The AL Central-leading Guardians improved to 28-4 against the Angels in Cleveland since the start of the 2014 season. The Angels also lost for the 16th time in their last 21 games.

ORIOLES 4, YANKEES 2

BALTIMORE (AP) — Ryan Weathers took a no-hitter into the seventh inning, then gave up a single before Coby Mayo hit a three-run homer off reliever Brent Headrick to lift Baltimore over New York.

Weathers lost his no-hit bid when Adley Rutschman opened the seventh with a bouncer up the middle. After Tyler O’Neill drew a one-out walk, Yankees manager Aaron Boone brought in Headrick (3-1).

Mayo, who came into the game with a .158 batting average, hit Headrick’s third pitch into the left-field seats.

Weathers struck out nine and walked three. He threw 101 pitches.

Dietrich Enns (1-0) got the win in relief of starter Brandon Young, and rookie Anthony Nunez got three outs for his second save.

RAYS 8, BLUE JAYS 5

TORONTO (AP) — Jonathan Aranda hit a home run and drove in three, Richie Palacios had three hits and three RBIs, and AL East-leading Tampa Bay beat Toronto, their 15th win in their last 17 games.

Chandler Simpson had three hits, stole two bases and scored three runs as the Rays improved their AL-best record when scoring four runs or more to 21-4. Tampa Bay has won 10 straight and 20 of 21 when scoring four or more.

Andrés Giménez hit two home runs for the Blue Jays, the first multihomer game of his career. Giménez hit a three-run drive off Drew Rasmussen in the second and added a two-run shot off Ian Seymour in the seventh.

Giménez’s homers ended Tampa Bay’s franchise-record streak of allowing three earned runs or fewer at 16 games.

Rasmussen (3-1) allowed three runs and four hits in six innings.

Hunter Bigge got five outs and Bryan Baker finished for his 11th save in 13 chances.

DIAMONDBACKS 1, RANGERS 0

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Michael Soroka allowed three singles over 6 1/3 scoreless innings, and Geraldo Perdomo drove home the game’s only run three batters in as Arizona beat Texas.

Perdomo’s RBI double one-hopped into the right field corner after Corbin Carroll hit a one-out double to left center in the first. The Diamondbacks have won three straight for the first time since mid-April.

Soroka (5-2) was on the other end of a 1-0 game in his previous start, losing to Pittsburgh on Wednesday.

Paul Sewald pitched the ninth inning for his ninth save in as many opportunities.

Texas threw a five-man bullpen game after scheduled starter Nathan Eovaldi reported left side soreness Monday morning and was scratched. Jakob Junis (0-1) made his first start since 2024 with Cincinnati. Junis’ 2 2/3 innings, 31 pitches and 10 batters faced were season highs.

Diamondbacks pitchers have allowed just two runs in the last three games.

MARINERS 3, ASTROS 1

HOUSTON (AP) — Julio Rodríguez homered and Randy Arozarena added two hits to lead Seattle to a win over Houston.

It’s Seattle’s franchise-record eighth straight win over the Astros and comes after the Mariners dropped their last two games.

Dominic Canzone and Cole Young both hit RBI singles in the second and Rodríguez’s seventh home run of the season made it 3-0 in the third.

Seattle’s Cal Raleigh went 0 for 4 to make last year’s AL MVP runner-up 0 for 36 since his last hit on April 27. His slump is the longest hitless streak in the majors this season.

He almost got a hit on his last at-bat in the ninth, but left fielder Zach Cole made a sliding grab to send him back to the dugout.

Seattle’s George Kirby (5-2) allowed seven hits and a run with seven strikeouts in five innings. Andrés Muñoz allowed a two-out single to Altuve in the ninth, but struck out Yordan Alvarez for his eighth save.

Houston starter Peter Lambert (2-3) allowed six hits and three runs while striking out six in seven innings.

GIANTS 9, DODGERS 3

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Rafael Devers homered early and drew a bases-loaded walk that broke a seventh-inning tie as San Francisco beat scuffling Los Angeles in the opener of a four-game series.

Willy Adames added a two-run single in the seventh against a shaky Dodgers bullpen. The two-time defending World Series champions have dropped eight of 12, including three straight blowout losses, as their offense continues to falter. They’ve scored three runs or fewer in nine of those 12 games.

Shohei Ohtani went 0 for 5 with two strikeouts, making the four-time MVP hitless in 19 of 37 games with a plate appearance. Mookie Betts was 1 for 5 with a single in his first game since April 4 after returning from the injured list.

Los Angeles (24-17) fell out of first place in the NL West, dropping a half-game behind San Diego.
