Woods Richardson, McAdoo back with Blue Jays for series opener against Red Sox

TORONTO – Charles McAdoo has been pencilled into the Toronto Blue Jays’ lineup at third base for Monday night’s game against the Boston Red Sox.

McAdoo was recalled from Toronto’s triple-A affiliate in Buffalo, N.Y., earlier in the day to fill in for Kazuma Okamoto, who is considered day-to-day as he recovers from a contusion on his left knee. Manager John Schneider said that McAdoo would hit seventh in the batting order as the Blue Jays hope his hot hitting in the minors would carry over to the big leagues.

“He’s just going right in where Ok was,” said Schneider. “String of lefties coming up in the next three games, obviously he feels comfortable against righties too, but we need a little bit more production out of that spot. 

“You could probably see him in the outfield a little bit here too. He’s played there in Buffalo, so yeah, trying to get a little more offence going.”

Toronto also selected right-handed pitcher Simeon Woods Richardson to its major-league roster. Woods Richardson is on three days rest but Schneider said he could go as many as five innings for the Blue Jays.

“We’ve got a taxed bullpen,” he said at his desk within Rogers Centre. “I think we can use him quite a bit if we need to.”

McAdoo has four hits and a home run in 25 major-league at-bats, all coming earlier this season. He is batting .269 with 16 homers and 57 runs batted in triple-A.

Woods Richardson pitched 10 innings across three appearances for the Blue Jays without giving up an earned run earlier this season before being designated for assignment on June 26. He joined the triple-A Bisons after clearing waivers.

In corresponding moves, right-hander Lazaro Estrada and utility player Davis Schneider were optioned to Buffalo.

Outfielder Rudy Martin Jr. was assigned to the Bisons after clearing waivers and catcher Willie MacIver was designated for assignment.

Schneider said that all-star Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and George Springer, who had both been hurt in games against the Philadelphia Phillies over the weekend, were fine. Guerrero was hitting third against Boston and Springer fourth.

Pitcher Spencer Arrighetti has Morton’s neuroma, a condition where skin builds up near a nerve in the foot and creates discomfort, like a permanent pebble in one’s shoe. Schneider said there was no timeline for Arrighetti’s return.

“We’re hoping he can pitch through it and feel better with treatment, but it’s kind of a new one for me,” he said.
