MILWAUKEE (AP) — Jacob Misiorowski threw six shutout innings to outduel Chris Sale and William Contreras went 4 for 4 as the Milwaukee Brewers defeated the Atlanta Braves 2-1 on Friday.

Misiorowski (13-5) struck out six while allowing four hits and two walks to win this matchup of Cy Young Award contenders from first-place teams. Misiorowski threw 96 pitches and hit at least 100 mph on 32 of them — including a top velocity of 103.1 — but also mixed in more sliders than usual.

He lowered his ERA to 1.68 and increased his strikeout total to 216. The right-hander leads the major leagues in both categories.

Atlanta left the bases loaded in the eighth and stranded the potential tying run at second in the ninth when Trevor Megill struck out Ronald Acuña Jr. to earn his 24th save in 26 opportunities.

Sale, one of the pitchers Misiorowski has said he admired most while growing up, scattered eight hits and walked none while striking out six in six innings. The 2024 Cy Young Award winner has allowed three runs or fewer in an MLB-leading 20 consecutive starts.

Milwaukee got both its runs off Sale (12-9) in the third inning.

ORIOLES 5, RAYS 3

BALTIMORE (AP) — Pete Alonso hit a go-ahead two-run homer for his 30th of the season, Trevor Rogers struck out six in seven innings and Baltimore defeated AL East-leading Tampa Bay Rays.

Alonso also had an RBI single in the first to extend his hitting streak to a career-high 13 games. He’s batting .480 during the stretch.

Rogers (9-8) allowed three runs and six hits in his third quality start across four starts in August. He walked one.

After Alonso put the Orioles ahead in the first, Chandler Simpson tied it in the second with an RBI single. Kenny Piper hit first career homer, a two-run 410-footer to center, to give the Rays a 3-1 lead.

Dylan Beavers launched a solo shot in the fourth to get one back. Jackson Holliday tied it with a sacrifice fly in the fifth.

Alonso then blasted his 30th homer 443 feet to left, giving Baltimore the lead for good. He became the eighth Orioles player since 1954 to hit 30 home runs in his first season with the club.

Rico Garcia struck out two in the ninth for his sixth save.

RED SOX 6, GIANTS 4

BOSTON (AP) — Willson Contreras hit a three-run home run and Boston held off San Francisco in the return of Rafael Devers to Fenway Park.

The Giants pulled within 5-4 in the fourth inning after Drew Gilbert hit a two-run homer off Boston starter Sonny Gray, and Devers followed with a solo homer, his 26th this season.

But Wilyer Abreu’s RBI triple in the sixth gave Boston enough cushion. Gray (16-3) pitched six innings, allowing four runs off seven hits and while striking out six. Aroldis Chapman struck out three and walked one in the ninth to pick up his 28th save.

Bryce Eldridge added an RBI single for San Francisco.

Contreras jumped on an 85-mph changeup from Giants starter Logan Webb (8-8) and crushed a 450-foot rope over the Green Monster and out of stadium for his 26th homer to put the Red Sox in front 3-1.

It was part of a five-run inning for Boston. Webb walked Andruw Monasterio with the bases loaded and then hit Mickey Gasper to let in another run before being pulled.

Friday marked Devers’ first time back at Fenway Park since a refusal to play first base contributed to the three-time All-Star being traded to San Francisco 14 months ago.

YANKEES 3, BLUE JAYS 1

NEW YORK (AP) — Rookie Spencer Jones hit a towering two-run homer in the second inning that was upheld on replay, and New York beat Toronto for its fifth straight victory.

New York starter Cam Schlittler (11-6) held the Blue Jays to one run and six hits in six innings. The tall right-hander allowed one earned run or fewer for the major league-leading 19th time and got his first win since July 24.

After Trent Grisham opened the second with a walk, Jones lifted Spencer Arrighetti’s 2-1 curveball to right field. The ball stayed fair, passed the foul pole before landing about halfway up the second deck.

Jones watched the flight of the ball before starting his home run trot. As he was about halfway through, Toronto manager John Schneider called for a review and the home run stood following a brief delay.

It was Jones’ seventh homer and the second time he homered in consecutive games. Jones also went deep at Wrigley Field July 31-Aug. 1.

José Caballero lifted a sacrifice fly for a 3-0 lead in the fourth as the Yankees won for the ninth time in 13 games. New York moved within three games of first-place Tampa Bay in the AL East.

PHILLIES 7, CARDINALS 6, 10 INNINGS

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Alec Bohm tripled to deep center field in the 10th inning Friday night, driving in two runs as Philadelphia beat St. Louis.

Bohm hit a 2-2 pitch from St. Louis reliever Luis Gastelum (3-3) that eluded Jose Fermin in center. Automatic runner Bryce Harper and Edmundo Sosa, running for Luis Arraez, scored on the play as the Phillies extended their winning streak to seven games.

Gastelum had cruised through the ninth inning, but gave up consecutive hits to Arraez and Bohm in the 10th.

It was Bohm’s third hit of the game. Arraez and Brandon Marsh also had three hits for the Phillies.

The Cardinals had scored their extra runner in the top half of the inning on Fermin’s RBI single off Alex McFarlane (2-1).

The Cardinals managed six hits off Phillies starter Jesus Luzardo, two of them homers.

MARLINS 3, NATIONALS 2

MIAMI (AP) — Javier Sanoja singled through the middle with the bases loaded and no out in the ninth inning to give Miami a victory over Washington.

Washington tied it in the top of the ninth on Daylen Lile’s single off Pete Fairbanks (4-4).

In the bottom half, Agustín Ramírez led off with a walk off Clayton Beeter (5-4). Beeter’s throwing error on Esteury Ruiz’s infield hit put runners on second and third, and Jakob Marsee was walked intentionally before Sanoja singled to end it.

Miami moved a game over .500 at 65-64, beating the Nationals for the sixth straight time. Washington dropped to 61-69.

Marsee tripled leading off the eighth against Tom Cosgrove for the Marlins’ second hit and Sanoja singled to tie it 1. Otto Lopez had a two-out single for a 2-1 lead.

Keibert Ruiz hit his eight homer on a one-out pitch from Tyler Zuber to put the Nationals up 1-0 in the sixth. It was the first earned run allowed by Zuber since July 24, spanning 12 appearances.

ASTROS 4, ATHLETICS 0

HOUSTON (AP) — Yordan Alvarez doubled twice and drove in two runs to lead Houston to a victory over the Athletics.

The AL West leaders bounced back after an embarrassing 18-3 loss to the Angels on Thursday night behind the strong game from Alvarez, who leads the American League in batting average (.321), home runs (36) and RBIs (90).

His first double made it 2-0 in the fifth and his 28th double of the season, which bounced off the wall in left field, extended it to 4-0 in the seventh.

Houston starter Hayden Wesneski (3-1) allowed one hit and struck out four in five innings and four relievers completed the three-hitter.

J.T. Ginn (8-8) yielded six hits and three runs while walking two in five innings as the A’s lost their fifth straight.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Vinnie Pasquantino, Kyle Isbel and Carter Jensen all hit solo home runs to power Kansas City past Detroit for its sixth straight victory.

John Schreiber got two outs in the seventh, but gave up two runs before Steven Cruz ended the rally with a scoreless 1 1/3 innings. Nate Pearson struck out Dillon Dingler with two on in the ninth for his third save.

Pasquantino hit a one-out double off rookie Troy Melton (7-2) in the fourth and scored on a two-out fielding error by rookie shortstop Kevin McGonigle on Michael Massey’s grounder to give the Royals the lead.

Isbel hit a leadoff homer in the fifth to put the Royals up 2-0.

Pasquantino hit his eighth homer, a leadoff shot in the sixth to make it 3-0.

WHITE SOX 6, METS 4

CHICAGO (AP) — Jake Rogers hit a tiebreaking two-run homer off Jefry Yan with two out in the ninth inning, and Chicago topped New York.

Colson Montgomery opened the ninth with a walk, and pinch-runner Braden Montgomery advanced on Brenton Doyle’s sacrifice bunt. One batter later, Rogers drove a 98.1 mph fastball deep to center for his first homer since he was claimed off waivers from Boston last week.

Yan (1-1), known for his high-flying celebrations on the mound, was charged with his first loss in his seventh major league game.

Miguel Vargas, Randal Grichuk and Colson Montgomery hit back-to-back-to-back homers for Chicago in the sixth. Grant Taylor (5-2) got three outs for the win.

The AL Central leaders had dropped three of four.

Bo Bichette homered for New York, and Brett Baty had two hits and two RBIs. Marcus Semien contributed a run-scoring single.

RANGERS 2, ANGELS 1, 10 INNINGS

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Wyatt Langford had a tying RBI double in the 10th inning, then scored the winning run on third baseman Denzer Guzman’s throwing error as Texas beat Los Angeles.

Guzman had opened the top of the 10th with an RBI double to put the Angels ahead in the eighth MLB game this season that was scoreless going into extra innings.

With two outs in the bottom of the 10th after an intentional walk, Guzman made a nice stop on a grounder by Ezequiel Duran. But his wide throw to second base trying to get an inning-ending forceout allowed Langford to race home.

Tyler Alexander (4-2) pitched the 10th and struck out two for the win.

Ben Joyce (0-1) gave up two hits and two runs, neither earned, in 2/3 of an inning.

GUARDIANS 9, ROCKIES 1

DENVER (AP) — Patrick Bailey and Petey Halpin homered, rookie Travis Bazzana tied a career high with four hits, and Cleveland used production from bottom of its batting order to beat Colorado.

Bazzana, Bailey and Halpin, batting in the seventh through ninth spots, combined to drive in seven of the nine runs to help Cleveland gain ground in the AL wild-card race. The Guardians moved past Toronto and remained a game behind Texas for the final playoff berth.

Tim Herrin (2-4) tossed 1 1/3 innings of relief for Cleveland and Chase DeLauter returned to the lineup after missing three games with a hamstring injury.

Colorado third baseman Kyle Karros singled and walked in his return from the seven-day concussion injury list, but shortstop Ezequiel Tovar left the game in the fourth inning due to illness. Catcher Brett Sullivan got the final two outs in the ninth inning in his seventh relief appearance this season.

Cleveland built a 3-1 lead against Tanner Gordon (0-4) on Halpin’s solo home run in the third and Bazzana’s two-run single in the fourth. The Guardians took advantage in the fifth when Steven Kwan walked and Rockies center fielder Cole Carrigg lost DeLauter’s fly in the lights for a single.

The Padres retired the final 16 Twins batters.

San Diego won for the ninth time in 12 games and for the 19th time in 26.

The 24-year-old Lawlar had the first three-hit game of his career while Geraldo Perdomo also had a three hits. Gabriel Moreno, Tim Tawa and Corbin Carroll all had two hits. The Reds have dropped six of their past eight games.

Cincinnati left-hander Nick Lodolo (3-3) was hit hard, giving up six runs on 10 hits and two walks over 3 1/3 innings. The D-backs scored at least one run in each of the first four innings, building a 6-0 lead by the fifth.

Seranthony Domínguez (5-3) threw a scoreless 10th, leaving a runner stranded at third.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Tommy Edman singled in the winning run with two outs in the 10th inning, lifting Los Angeles over Pittsburgh.

Edman hit a line drive to left field off Gregory Soto (5-4), scoring automatic runner Kiké Hernández from third, keeping the Dodgers as the only undefeated team in extra innings in the majors this season.

With Hernández starting at second, pinch-hitter Alex Call struck out and Mookie Betts was intentionally walked. Kyle Tucker grounded into a fielder’s choice to second, where Betts was out.

Evan Phillips (1-2) got the win with one inning of relief.

The NL West-leading Dodgers have won eight of their last 11.

Pittsburgh’s Oneil Cruz hit a two-run homer off reliever Kyle Hurt in the eighth to make it 4-4.
