Schwarber’s 44th homer, a grand slam, powers Phillies’ 11-7 comeback win over Astros

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Kyle Schwarber hit a grand slam for his majors-leading 44th home run, Trea Turner also homered and the Philadelphia Phillies overcame two deficits to beat the Houston Astros 11-7 on Wednesday night.

The Phillies’ offense masked a shaky performance from starter Cristopher Sanchez (17-5), who got his NL-leading victory despite allowing six runs on 10 hits in six innings.

Schwarber connected on a 3-2 sweeper from reliever A.J. Blubaugh to cap a six-run sixth inning. It was Schwarber’s 10th career grand slam and his fourth home run in the last five games.

Turner had a pair of hits, including a solo homer, off of Astros starter Hunter Brown. Turner also had a single and stole a base to get into scoring position before scoring on a two-run single by Bryce Harper in the third, an inning in which the Phillies erased an early 4-0 deficit by scoring four of their own.

Luis Arraez, Edmundo Sosa and Bryan De La Cruz also had RBIs for Philadelphia.

Isaac Paredes and Cam Smith each hit two-run homers for Houston, and Yordan Alvarez had an RBI double.

LHP Bryan King (2-5) took the loss in relief for Houston. He didn’t record an out and allowed four runs, three earned, on three hits.

Jose Altuve became just the second Astros player to record 2,500 career hits when he doubled off Sanchez in the third. He joined Craig Biggio, who is Houston’s all-time hit leader (3,060). Altuve and Los Angeles Dodgers first baseman Freddie Freeman are the only active players with at least 2,500.

TIGERS 7, TWINS 2

DETROIT (AP) — Colt Keith homered and Detroit ended a seven-series losing streak with a win over Minnesota.

The Tigers hadn’t won a series since taking two of three from the Cleveland Guardians Aug. 11-13. They had lost 16 of their last 24 games before Wednesday’s win.

The Twins have lost 12 of 18.

Tyler Holton (2-5) picked up the win with two scoreless innings of relief. Starter Keider Montero left after allowing two runs in four innings.

Zebby Matthews (9-10) took the loss, giving up five runs in 2 1/3 innings.

ATHLETICS 2, BLUE JAYS 0

WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Henry Bolte hit a solo home run in the third inning and Tyler White scored on a wild pitch as the Athletics beat Toronto.

Athletics left-handed pitcher Brady Basso allowed three hits and three walks with four strikeouts in four innings. Basso’s worked out of a jam in the fourth when the Blue Jays threatened with runners on the corners, but got out of the inning with a strikeout.

Scott Blewett (2-0) earned the win by working two innings and allowing two hits and a walk, with a strikeout.

Bolte hit his 10th home run of the season in the third inning off Michael Lorenzen (3-12), one of six pitchers used by Toronto in a bullpen game. Lorenzen worked 2 2/3 innings, giving up four hits, a walk and the only runs in the game.

A wild pitch that scored White in the fourth was enough for Toronto to pull Lorenzen.

The Athletics’ bullpen held Toronto in check for the remaining five innings after Basso exited. The bullpen combined for four strikeouts and allowed just three hits. The A’s bullpen has allowed one earned run or fewer in 15 of its last 20 games.

Elvis Alvardo (4-3) entered in the ninth and struck out two before forcing a flyout to earn his sixth save.

MARINERS 3, RANGERS 2

SEATTLE (AP) — Rookie Kade Anderson picked up his first major league victory with six sharp innings, and Cole Young hit a two-run double as Seattle beat Texas.

Making his fourth big league start, the 22-year-old Anderson (1-1) allowed six hits, struck out five and walked one in an efficient 81-pitch outing. He allowed a homer to Jake Burger leading off the second.

The third overall pick in the 2025 amateur draft, Anderson debuted on Aug. 22, allowing three runs in 5 2/3 innings against the visiting Chicago Cubs. He took his first loss last Thursday against the Athletics.

Seranthony Dominguez relieved Anderson in the seventh. Gabe Speier allowed Corey Seager’s homer in the eighth, and Andrés Muñoz worked the ninth for his 26th save.

PADRES 9, NATIONALS 2

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Jackson Merrill homered twice, had a career-high six RBIs and fell a double short of a cycle to help San Diego beat Washington after the hottest first-pitch temperature in Petco Park history at 95 degrees.

The previous record was 93 on Sept. 10, 2015, in a game against the Colorado Rockies. Petco Park opened in 2004.

Merrill tied his career high with 24 homers. He’s the third Padres player with a triple and two home runs in the same game.

The Padres swept the three-game series and have a four-game winning streak as they fight Arizona for the final NL wild card.

Kyle Hart (1-3) got the win with 2 1/3 shutout innings.

GIANTS 7, CARDINALS 6

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Shay Whitcomb’s RBI double capped a six-run rally with two out in the eighth inning as San Francisco beat St. Louis to complete a series sweep.

With a runner at first and two outs in the eighth, Cade Winquest hit Brett Harris with a pitch and then walked Turner Hill. Bryce Eldridge followed with a two-run single to left to make it 6-3. George Soriano (6-5) replaced Winquest, and Jonah Cox hit an infield single that drove in another run. Jung Hoo Lee tied the game with a two-run double off the wall in right and scored the winning run on Whitcomb’s double to center.

Eldridge drove in three runs and extended his on-base streak to 18 games.

Left-hander Matt Wilkinson (1-3) pitched two shutout innings for his first major-league win. Trent Harris worked a scoreless ninth for his first career save.

ORIOLES 9, GUARDIANS 5

BALTIMORE (AP) — Dylan Beavers had two hits and three RBIs in an eight-run third inning that carried Baltimore past Cleveland.

Coby Mayo tacked on a sixth-inning homer for the Orioles, who had lost seven of eight before cranking up their offense against Cleveland lefty Foster Griffin (15-5).

Chase DeLauter and Nathaniel Lowe homered for the Guardians, who hold a narrow lead for the third AL wild-card spot and are chasing the first-place Chicago White Sox in the AL Central.

Baltimore trailed 2-0 before sending 14 batters to the plate and getting eight hits in the pivotal third inning.

After the first two batters singled off Griffin, Beavers twice attempted to bunt. Griffin then bounced a pickoff throw to second base)into the outfield, allowing both runners to advance.

Beavers followed with an opposite-field double to left that started Baltimore’s parade to the plate.

A single and a walk loaded the bases, and Griffin hit Christian Encarnacion-Strand with a pitch to force in a run. Jackson Holliday then delivered an RBI single before Rece Hinds hit a sacrifice fly for the first out of the inning.

A single by Jeremiah Jackson made it 6-2, and Leody Taveras chased Griffin with his second hit of the inning — a run-scoring single. Two batters later, Beavers capped the uprising with an RBI single to center.

Shane Baz (6-15) allowed five runs in 5 2/3 innings for the Orioles.

ANGELS 6, RED SOX 4

BOSTON (AP) — Zach Neto hit a three-run homer over the Green Monster, Ryan Johnson gave up three runs over six innings and Los Angeles beat Boston to take the series.

Jose Siri added a two-run shot and Denzer Guzman a long solo homer for the Angels, who won consecutive games for the first time since taking three straight against Texas on Aug. 11-13.

Winning for just the fourth time in 15 games, Los Angeles captured its first road series since taking two of three from Houston on Aug. 18-20.

Roman Anthony hit a two-run homer and Wilyer Abreu a solo one for Boston, which lost the final two games after winning the opener Monday.

Coming in with a 1.67 ERA in his last six starts when he gave zero or one run five times, Johnson (4-8) breezed through his four scoreless innings, giving up two singles while his teammates built a 6-0 lead.

Jake Bennett (9-7) gave up a season-high six runs — five coming in one inning to surpass his previous high of four — on nine hits in 5 1/3 innings.

YANKEES 6, ROCKIES 1

NEW YORK (AP) — Rookie George Lombard Jr. became the second-youngest player in Yankees’ history to hit a grand slam as New York beat Colorado.

Aaron Judge singled in the third for his first hit since returning from a broken rib a day earlier and had another hit in the eighth before being lifted for a pinch runner. Judge went 2 for 4 and his only chance in right field was a catch on Kyle Karros near the foul line in the fourth.

Luis García Jr. homered in the second off Colorado starter Tomoyuki Sugano (12-9), and Cody Bellinger went deep in the eighth.

New York starter Will Warren (10-5) won his second straight start, allowing one run and four hits in six innings with a walk and eight strikeouts. He won consecutive starts for the first time since May 12-19.

RAYS 7, BRAVES 2

ATLANTA (AP) — Victor Mesa Jr. had two hits, including a home run, Griffin Jax gave up only two hits and one run in five innings and Tampa Bay beat Atlanta to clinch the series win in the matchup of division leaders.

Including a 7-1 win on Tuesday night, the Rays have outscored the Braves 14-3 in the first two games of the three-game series.

AL East-leading Tampa Bay hit four homers in Tuesday night’s win. Mesa’s homer was the Rays’ only extra-base hit on Wednesday night, but Tampa Bay outhit Atlanta 10-3 and added three steals. Jorge Mateo had a two-run single in a three-run second inning.

Drake Baldwin’s homer in the fourth was the only run allowed by Jax (7-10).

The Rays remained four games ahead of the New York Yankees in the AL East with a magic number of four to clinch their first postseason berth since 2023. The Braves saw their NL East lead over Philadelphia reduced to three games.

Braves right-hander Reynaldo López (4-4) allowed six runs in 4 2/3 innings in his first appearance since July 26.

BREWERS 8, CUBS 6

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Christian Yelich hit a three-run homer, Logan Henderson threw five innings of two-hit ball and Milwaukee completed a sweep of rival Chicago, holding on for a victory to extend its NL Central lead to 10 games over the Cubs.

Jackson Chourio and William Contreras also homered for majors-leading Milwaukee.

The Cubs scored five runs in the ninth, starting with four walks by Brandon Sproat. Abner Uribe relieved and gave up an RBI single, a run-scoring ground out and a two-run double by Michael Conforto to make it 8-6.

Henderson (10-3) retired the first nine before Pete Crow-Armstrong singled to open the fourth. Crow-Armstrong advanced on a passed ball, took third on a fly out, and scored the unearned run on a ground out to cut the deficit to 7-1.

Henderson allowed one unearned run on two hits, striking out six and walking one before exiting after Carson Kelly’s leadoff single in the sixth.

Kevin Gausman (9-12) allowed seven runs, six earned, on eight hits in four innings, including three home runs.

PIRATES 4, WHITE SOX 2

CHICAGO (AP) — Rookie Esmerlyn Valdez hit a solo shot, rookie Konnor Griffin singled in two runs in Pittsburgh’s three-run seventh inning and the Pirates held on to beat the Chicago for their third straight victory.

Rafael Flores Jr. added an RBI single to help the Pirates win for the eighth time in 10 games to climb back to .500.

Pittsburgh used eight pitchers to hand the White Sox a second straight loss and their seventh in their last 10. AL Central-leading Chicago (75-70) maintained a two-game lead over Cleveland, which lost at Baltimore.

The benches and bullpens emptied in the seventh, but order was quickly restored.

Yohan Ramirez, Pittsburgh’s sixth pitcher, entered and got Miguel Vargas to ground into an inning-ending double play with the bases loaded and the Pirates head 4-1. Sam Antonacci elbowed Brandon Lowe at second as he came up from his slide to set off the fracas.

Antonacci’s RBI infield single had driven in Chicago’s first run.

White Sox slugger Munetaka Murakami hit his 31st homer in the eighth to cut it to 4-2, but struck out in his first two times at the plate, running his streak of strikeouts to eight straight plate appearances. Murakami was hit by a pitch from Gregory Soto in his third time up.

The White Sox loaded the bases off Luke Weaver with one out in the eighth, but Chase Meidroth lined to third for an inning-ending double-play.

Pirates opener Lake Bachar got the first five outs. Brandon Eisert (3-2) followed with 2 1/3 innings of hitless ball, striking out five, for the win. Carmen Mlodzinski, Soto, Camilo Doval, Ramirez and Weaver followed before Mason Montgomery pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for his 11th save

METS 15, MARLINS 14

MIAMI (AP) — Francisco Lindor hit a three-run homer, Christopher Morel added a two-run shot and finished a triple shy of the cycle as New York outslugged Miami to complete a series sweep.

Lindor hit his 18th homer of the season in a six-run seventh inning that put New York ahead to stay.

New York squandered an 8-0 lead and led 15-9 before hanging on as Miami scored twice in the eighth and three in the ninth.

A.J. Ewing hit a go-ahead sacrifice fly with the bases loaded after Marlins reliever Josh Ekness (1-3) hit a batter and walked two and was replaced by Tyler Zuber without recording an out. Morel and Torrens followed with RBI singles before Lindor connected off Zuber to make it 14-8.

The Marlins rallied with Joe Mack’s solo homer in the seventh and Owen Caissie’s two run single in the eighth. Graham Pauley hit an RBI single in the ninth to get the Marlins to 15-11 before Griffin Conine added a run-scoring double and scored on Otto Lopez’s triple. Tobias Myers relieved Nate Lavender and allowed Jakob Marsee’s one-out single that narrowed the gap to one before he struck out Caissie and retired Pauley on a pop out for his second save.

Marsee had four hits and three RBI as the Marlins finished with 20 hits. Caissie hit his 14th homer in the sixth.

The Marlins used seven relievers and the Mets six in the game that lasted 3 hours, 38 mintues.

ROYALS 5, DIAMONDBACKS 2

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Bobby Witt Jr. hit a three-run home run in the fifth inning and Kansas City beat Arizona in a game that was delayed 50 minutes by rain at the outset.

The Diamondbacks’ winning streak ended at four and they fell a half-game behind San Diego for the third wild card in the National League.

It was the third straight series in which the Royals won the final game to avoid a sweep.

Daniel Lynch (5-5) picked up the win, his first since moving into the starting rotation in early August. He allowed two runs on four hits in five innings. Nate Pearson earned his fourth save.

Michael Soroka (8-5) took the loss in relief, allowing three runs in four innings.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Yoshinobu Yamamoto struck out 10 while scattering three hits over seven innings, Mookie Betts, Max Muncy and Kiké Hernández each hit two-run homers, and Los Angeles routed Cincinnati for its season-high seventh consecutive win.

The Dodgers’ sweep helped them reduce their magic number to six for clinching their 13th NL West title in 14 years without injured Shohei Ohtani or Freddie Freeman in the lineup.

They broke out for six runs in the fourth and had all nine starters reach base in their 11th straight win at home over the Reds. It was the Dodgers’ most runs in an inning since June 27 when they had nine in Yamamoto’s win over San Diego.

Yamamoto (13-8) retired 17 of his first 20 batters. His 13 wins are a career high, while his strikeouts tied a season best.

Betts had his fifth multi-hit game in the first eight games of September. The shortstop went 3 for 5 with two RBIs, three runs scored and a walk in raising his average to .249.
