Goldeyes fare poorly on road

Grace Penner 4 minute read Friday, Jun. 19, 2026

IF Manitoba sports fans are unaware of the name Scott Oake, they’ve been deprived of one of the greatest sports voices of our time.

The award-winning and Manitoba Hockey Hall of Fame sportscaster will be honoured at Blue Cross Park when the Winnipeg Goldeyes roll back into town to start a three-game homestand against the Lincoln Saltdogs tonight.

The Fish were still on the road Thursday night, where they avoided a three-game sweep at the hands of the Saltdogs in Nebraska with a resoundning 8-1 victory.

Before returning home for the Winnipeg portion of the home-and-home, here’s how the Fish fared on their seven-game road trip.

Goldeyes stopped in tracks by Railroaders

The Winnipeg Goldeyes are battling a stubborn opponent this week — and Mother Nature has come in swinging a hot bat.

Torrential rains, high winds and frequent lightning wiped out Tuesday’s start of a three-game series against the Cleburne Railroaders and the wicked weather was again a factor during Wednesday’s drawn-out doubleheader at Blue Cross Park.

When they were finally able to squeeze in some baseball — storms triggered a 69-minute delay just as the sixth inning of Game 1 was getting underway — things didn’t exactly go swimmingly for the Fish.

A promising early 4-1 lead ended in a frustrating 8-5 loss which took a gruelling three-and-a-half hours to complete despite consisting of just seven innings.

Veteran pitcher Lambson finds form as Goldeyes edge Explorers

Mitch Lambson reached deep into his bag of tricks and came up with the type of clutch performance his Winnipeg Goldeyes desperately needed.

The crafty veteran shook off a poor start to his season on Sunday at Blue Cross Park, pitching into the seventh inning and reminding everyone why he’s been one of the American Association’s best starters over the course of his career.

The result was a 4-3 victory for the Goldeyes over the Sioux City Explorers in front of 4,040 fans on a hot, sunny and windy afternoon.

“I felt like I needed to go out there and give everything I had today for my team,” Lambson told the Free Press.

Double trouble for Goldeyes

Mike McIntyre 5 minute read Friday, Jun. 5, 2026

At their best, the Winnipeg Goldeyes have shown they can compete with anyone in the American Association.

The problem has been getting to that level on a regular basis, with the first 20 games of the 100-game campaign marked by dramatic peaks and valleys.

They are, to put it bluntly, consistently inconsistent.

Just look at their last three games for proof. An ugly 10-4 loss on Wednesday to Sioux Falls was followed by a dominant 14-3 win over those same Canaries on Thursday which was followed by a 10-5 defeat to the Sioux City Explorers on Friday night in front of 5,533 fans at Blue Cross Park.

Goldeyes look to weather early season storm as bullpen thins

The Winnipeg Goldeyes are hanging out the “Help Wanted” sign when it comes to starting pitching.

Three of the club’s projected five starters are currently unavailable, putting a major strain on the shorthanded squad early in the American Association season.

That was evident Wednesday afternoon as the Fish were beaten 10-4 by the Sioux Falls Canaries in front of 6,637 fans at Blue Cross Park, falling to 8-10 on the year.

Manager Logan Watkins had to turn to his bullpen to cover all nine innings due to unexpected circumstances.

Goldeyes hosted second school game of the season Wednesday

A sizeable chunk of inhabiting schools from around Friendly Manitoba came out to the Blue Cross Park to get a taste of what baseball is all about Wednesday.

The Winnipeg Goldeyes hosted their second school day of the year, filling the crowd with students from 78 different schools located throughout the province.

Goldeyes general manager Andrew Collier looks forward to these events every year as the stands are filled with smiling kids, whether they have a deep love for the sport or are just being introduced to it.

“They are really successful days of the year. Kids have a great time,” Collier said. “It’s nice to have a field trip and get out of school.”

Noah Marcelo is truly leading by example.

The speedy Winnipeg Goldeyes centrefielder — hitting out of the leadoff spot — has been cleaning up at the plate early and often in this American Association campaign.

He did it again on Monday night at Blue Cross Park.

Marcelo’s three-run homer in the bottom of the seventh brought his team all the way back from an early 3-0 deficit and proved to be the difference in a 6-3 victory over the Sioux Falls Canaries to begin a season-long 10-game homestand.

The Winnipeg Goldeyes are going streaking.

A 9-2 victory over the Milwaukee Milkmen on Sunday afternoon at Blue Cross Park makes it three wins in a row for the Fish — and four of the last five — as an early-season slump quickly fades into the distance.

“I’m not saying I was hitting the panic button, but you don’t want to dig a hole,” Goldeyes manager Logan Watkins told the Free Press of his club’s 0-4 start, which is now more palatable at 4-5.

“I knew we had good baseball players in here. That wasn’t a question. It was about getting going.”

WINNIPEG Goldeyes manager Logan Watkins was preaching patience earlier this week, believing it was only a matter of time until his team’s sleepy batters and pitchers began to wake up.

The alarm clock finally went off Friday night at Blue Cross Park.

A 9-2 victory over Milwaukee was just what the doctor ordered for a bleary-eyed group that had been outscored 49-16 through six games.

The Goldeyes improve to 2-5 on the young season, while the Milkmen — which swept Winnipeg over three games in Wisconsin last weekend — fall to 5-2.

Fish fried in finale against Cougars

Mike McIntyre 3 minute read Thursday, May. 21, 2026

They may have lost their charter bus to an arsonist, but the Kane County Cougars are leaving Winnipeg with a series victory.

An 11-5 triumph over the Goldeyes on Thursday afternoon in front of 5,885 fans at Blue Cross Park gives the visitors two out of three this week, improving their record to 4-2.

Winnipeg, meanwhile, was unable to build on Wednesday’s 3-2 win and now find themselves with a 1-5 record as the 100-game campaign is off to a sluggish start.

The Goldeyes had scored only 11 runs in their first five games (2-2-2-2-3), so putting a season-high five on the board Thursday at least represents some progress in that department.

Take a look around the Winnipeg Goldeyes clubhouse and one thing quickly becomes evident: this is quite the international school of Fish.

Eight different countries are represented on the current roster of 25 players, which might just make them the United Nations of the American Association.

“So many different cultures. It’s good to have all of them,” outfielder Roby Enriquez told the Free Press on Wednesday prior to his team facing the Kane County Cougars at Blue Cross Park.

“It’s a lot of fun, being with guys from around the world. You learn about language and food, experience different personalities. It’s a blessing to have them here on one team.”

Goldeyes smoked in home opener

The Winnipeg Goldeyes — not unlike the spring weather around here — apparently need a little more time to warm up.

A season-opening skid continued Tuesday night as the frigid Fish flopped in their 2026 home debut, falling 14-2 to the Kane County Cougars.

Winnipeg is now 0-4 to begin the 100-game campaign and has been outscored 35-8 in the process.

This latest lopsided loss was especially disappointing considering the Goldeyes got drubbed in front of a terrific crowd of 6,956 fans who braved bone-chilling temperatures hoping to root, root, root for the home team, only to be treated to some Bad News Bears baseball instead.

Milkmen spoil Goldeyes’ season opener

Mike McIntyre 3 minute read Friday, May. 15, 2026

The Winnipeg Goldeyes took their first swings of the new season Friday in Milwaukee — but failed to make much of an impact.

A 6-2 loss to the host Milkmen at Franklin Field spoiled opening night for the visiting Fish, although there are still 99 games left to change the narrative.

Left-fielder Roby Enriquez provided the offensive highlight, collecting four of Winnipeg’s eight hits — three singles and a double — while driving in the club’s first run of 2026 in the sixth inning. Designated hitter Jiandido Tromp had the other RBI on a ninth-inning fielder’s choice.

Right-fielder Max Murphy, third baseman Ramon Bramasco and second baseman Adam Hall each went 1-for-4 with a double, while shortstop Ray-Patrick Didder chipped in with a single. Tromp, along with first baseman T.J. Schofield-Sam, centre-fielder Noah Marcelo and catcher Kevin Garcia, were held hitless.

Max Murphy is officially one of us now.

Want proof? The veteran Winnipeg Goldeyes outfielder, who was born and raised in Minnesota, has now experienced one of the great local traditions — the wedding social.

“It went really well. A really good time,” Murphy told the Free Press on Wednesday with a laugh. “I had never really heard about them. Then I got here and people were like, ‘This is a thing here.’ Went to a few and they were pretty fun. Figured, ‘Why not have my own?’”

The party was held two weekends ago for Murphy and his Winnipeg fiancée, Maddie, and included plenty of Goldeyes teammates and staff, along with family, friends and even some fans. It was a vivid reminder to Murphy of why he loves playing here so much.

Weather aside, Goldeyes warmed by potential of new season at training camp

Mike McIntyre 6 minute read Wednesday, May. 6, 2026

It may feel more like hockey weather than baseball season around here, but that hasn’t stopped the Winnipeg Goldeyes from getting into the swing of things.

Sure, these Fish might be frozen during spring training, but optimism is already heating up about what these boys of summer could accomplish by early fall.

“I think we’ve got a really good team. I think we’re going to make a run at it,” veteran slugger Max Murphy told the Free Press on Wednesday at Blue Cross Park.

He’s talking about an American Association championship, which the Goldeyes last accomplished in 2017. They came close to winning it all in 2024 — the first year under skipper Logan Watkins — but ultimately lost in the final. Last year represented a step back, with a 41-58 record which led to missing the playoffs entirely.

Goodbye, Winnipeg Goldeyes.

Did we get you?

On Wednesday (also April Fool’s Day, coincidentally), Winnipeg’s pro baseball club made an appropriately timed announcement that it would be taking on a pesky and all-too-familiar alternate identity for one game this summer.

The Manitoba Mosquitoes will take the diamond for a weekend series-opener against the Lincoln Saltdogs on July 31, with hopes of being equally irritable to their opponent.
