JOEY WITHERSPOON and his Carberry Collegiate rink are just two wins away from earning an unprecedented third straight provincial boys’ high school curling title.
Witherspoon, third Tyler Calvert, second Morey Zwarich and lead Michael Mitchell won the A event on Friday with a 5-3 win over Brett Brezden of Dauphin in the 2009 Manitoba High Schools Athletic Association provincials at the Carberry Curling Club.
The Witherspoon team will play in the B-side semifinal on Saturday at noon and would advance to the 3 p.m. B final with a win. Witherspoon won four straight in the A event, including a come-from-behind win in the final.
"We got down early but we came back and then (Brezden) had a draw to the four-foot to win but he just went a little bit deep so we stole one and won the game," Witherspoon said.
On the girls’ side, Kate Cameron of Winnipeg’s Dakota Collegiate edged Virden’s Janelle Vachon 4-3 in the A event final.
