Manitoba curlers in the hunt

BOTH Manitoba’s men’s and women’s teams were playing in the semifinals late Saturday night at the 2009 Dundee Canadian Masters Curling Championships in Saskatoon.

Elaine Jones and her team of third Sylvia Erickson, second Joyce Magnusson and lead Ruth Wiebe of the St. Vital Curling Club were playing Saskatchewan’s Lee Morrison, from the host Nutana Curling Club, in the women’s semi.

The Jones team finished with a 5-4 record after round-robin play and went on to qualify for the semifinal game. Saturday night’s winner was to meet Alberta in the final today.

In men’s play, Ray Orr and his Minnedosa team of third Dennis Peckover, second Brian Manns and lead John Mendrikis finished in a four-way tie for first with a 6-3 record.

After a complicated tie-breaking formula, it was determined that Manitoba would face Ontario in one semifinal while Newfoundland and B.C. met in the other late Saturday.

The winners were to advance to today’s final.
