IT’S time to find more space in Manitoba’s crowded curling trophy cabinet.
The Manitoba men’s team of skip Ray Orr, third Dennis Peckover, second Brian Manns and lead John Mendrikis defeated B.C.’s Rick Pughe 4-3 Sunday to win the Canadian Masters title at the Nutana Curling Club in Saskatoon.
Orr drew the button in the eighth and final end for the win. Although his rock was a bit light, his Minnedosa teammates swept it in to earn the national title.
“Give the sweepers a big hug,” Orr told the Saskatoon Star-Phoenix after the big shot.
They advanced to the final with a convincing 8-2 victory over Ontario in Saturday night’s semifinal.
The Manitoba women’s masters team, with skip Elaine Jones, third Sylvia Erickson, second Joyce Magnusson and lead Ruth Wiebe, finished the round-robin with a 5-4 record, a win away from qualifying for the playoffs.
