CANADIAN Curling Hall of Fame member Janet Arnott, who helped guide Winnipeg’s Jennifer Jones and her team to a world women’s curling championship in 2008, was among several coaches honoured Saturday with Coaching Manitoba Excellence Awards.
Arnott, a member of world champion Connie Laliberte’s 1984 championship team — and also Laliberte’s sister — has won the Peter Williamson Memorial high performance award for her work with the Jones foursome, who repeated as Canadian champs this year.
“Recognizing coaches is an essential part of what we do,” said Greg Guenther, director of coaching for Sport Manitoba. “It’s very important to formally recognize the dedication, hard work and commitment our coaches are making to the community.”
Other award winners include:
“ö Tony Franklin, Deloraine (Vince Leah Memorial grassroots award) — Franklin is a certified level 1 hockey coach who has coached the CIS Brandon University Bobcats and in the female Under-18 program of excellence, and is also a member of Hockey Manitoba’s national coach mentorship program as well as director of high school hockey for Hockey Manitoba.
“ö Pedro Daza (Dr. Jack Hunt Memorial developmental award) — Daza is a Level 3 coach whose focus has been on preparing the Team Manitoba boys soccer team for the 2009 Canada Summer Games.
“ö Daryl Ford (Peter Dick school systems award) — Ford is a certified coach in hockey, basketball and volleyball and has 32 years of experience coaching primarily in Glenboro and Brandon.
Kristy Fewchuk of Winnipeg and Jim Partaker of St. Claude won Manitoba Aboriginal Coaching Awards.
Other coaches with more than 25 years experience or with international experience were also honoured.
The coach of the year award will be handed out May 21 at Sport Manitoba’s 2009 Sport for Life Gala.
