Canada Games curling coaches named

Ron Lamb of Sandy Hook and Calvin Edie of Dugald have been named head coaches of Manitoba’s female and male curling teams for the for the 2011 Canada Games which will be held Feb. 11-27 in Halifax.

Ron Lamb of Sandy Hook and Calvin Edie of Dugald have been named head coaches of Manitoba’s female and male curling teams for the for the 2011 Canada Games which will be held Feb. 11-27 in Halifax.

Lamb will lead the female team of Beth Peterson, Robyn Njegovan, Melissa Gordon and Breanne Yozenko. Also the head coach for Manitoba’s wheelchair curling team, Lamb is a Level 4 curling coach and a coaching course facilitator who also participates in curling.

Edie will coach the male team of Kyle Doering, Colton Lott, Lucas Van Den Bosch and Derek Oryniak.

A Level 3 coach with over 30 years of experience, Edie has coached the Jason Gunnlaugson men’s team which made numerous trips to the provincial championship, two trips to the national championship and competed last year in the pre-Olympic trials and Olympic trials.

In other local curling news, the 2011 Canadian Masters Curling Championships will be held in Winnipeg at the Assiniboine Memorial Curling Club (AMCC) on March 30-April 5. The event will include the top men’s and women’s curling teams in the masters age group of over 60 years of age.

“We are excited to host Canada and can’t think of a better way to conclude the 2010-2011 season than with a national championship event here in Manitoba. AMCC is a great club with great volunteers and we know they will provide the competitors with a first class event,” Shane Ray, executive director of CurlManitoba, said in a statement.

The Canadian Masters Curling Championships became a nation-wide competition in 2000.

Manitoba has previously won five national titles in the men’s category in 2009 (Ray Orr), 2005 (Doug Armour), 2004 (Martin Bailey), 2002 (Ken Grove), 2001 (Barry Fry).

Manitoba has hosted the event twice previously including 2001 at Fort Garry Curling in Winnipeg and in 2005 at the Riverview Curling Club in Brandon.
