SASKATOON — The Point Optical Curling Classic wasn’t exactly a contest of renowned heavy hitters this year.

Perhaps it’s fitting, then, that two of the more prominent skips in attendance were knocked out in the semifinals, while the winning team was cobbled together for this tournament specifically.

“It’s just a bunch of buddies who threw together a team,” said winning skip Dave Elias of Winnipeg. His crew beat Regina’s Randy Bryden 7-3 on Monday for the tournament’s top prize of $15,000.

“I don’t know if we expected to be in the final. We (hoped) to play well,” said Elias

His motley crew — featuring Reid Carruthers, Derek Samagalski and Chris Suchy — had never played together in an event prior to this weekend.

Bryden got on the board first with a single in the opening end but Elias took control from there.

From here, the group will head home and resume play with their respective teams.
